On International Yarn Bombing Day, join fiber artist Heather Cameron and Mermaid Spring for a public design workshop exploring the possibilities of crochet and crowd-sourced scenography.
Hyperbolic crochet is a deceptively simple technique that allows you to create fantastic other-worldly shapes using just yarn and a crochet hook. It is suitable for beginners yet sophisticated enough to delight experienced crocheters. This three hour workshop will teach the basic stitch and variations, and you will have time to finish one or more objects. All materials supplied, please bring a bag lunch.
Heather Cameron is a visual artist who loves playing with fibre in all its forms. Skilled in spinning, weaving, knitting, embroidery and sewing, she has recently segued into the multivalent realms of crochet. An experienced teacher, Heather has exhibited widely and has work in both public and private collections in Canada, the U.S. and Japan. More at
Mermaid Spring is a serialized musical in co-creation by designer and performance maker Kyla Gardiner, writer Barbara Adler and musical director/producer James Meger, featuring compositions by Peggy Lee, Leah Abramson and Alicia Hansen. Over three episodes of live theatre, we want to tell a story and create a process that helps us test more ethical relationships between people, places and non-human subjects. One way were trying to do this is by coaxing our audiences into feeling connected to and curious about the design and material world of the show. In other words, its environment. To help craft this world, were inviting a generous group of people to labour with us to crochet a design ecology of epiphytes and lichens. Maybe thats you?
