The Social Studios
The SCA's James Long and , partnering with , have received funding from ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's Community Engagement Initiative for a new focus called Creative Exploration in Place, beginning this fall with the Social Studios, which is a new program of study in the SCA's Theatre & Performance area. The inaugural courses will be taught by Tacata. Here's more on the project:
In the Fall of 2023, ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s Theatre & Performance (T&P) program will introduce a new program of study – the Social Studios – focused on the intersection of performance studies and community engaged practice. This transition aligns with similar national and international trends that inquire into the larger social impact of the performing arts and a desire on the part of T&P to find deeper connections to its urban location. Our goal with this program of study is to promote lifelong learning and engagement on the part of T&P students with respect to social issues and introduce a modes of public engagement via performance practice. Two courses will take place over subsequent semesters in a student’s third year of study – the first serving as a survey of the ethics, history and methodologies of social practice; and the second involving a practice-based exploration that results in a public facing event. For this inaugural year we hope to partner with 312 Main to complete a study of the enterprise as a whole. This introduction to the bricks, mortar, purpose and function will provide a basis for what we hope will be a long-term relationship with 312 that includes working with individual organizations housed within.
