The SCA Film Student Union has organized a screening of two films by the SCA's Simone Rapisarda Casanova: El 谩rbol de las fresas (The Strawberry Tree) on Friday, January 31, 2025, and La creazione di significato (The Creation of Meaning) on Friday, February 7, 2025.
About the films
Filmed in the remote hamlet of Juan Antonio, Cuba, only weeks before it was wiped out by a hurricane, El 谩rbol de las fresas (The Strawberry Tree) challenges the boundaries between ethnography, documentary and reverie in capturing the final sigh of one of Cuba's last fishing villages. The villagers鈥� ingeniousness and resilience, as well as their playful and irreverent relationship with the filmmaker, render a sensitive portrait of a unique culture into a reflection on documentary filmmaking and on humanity on the edge of time. La creazione di significato (The Creation of Meaning) is set in the Tuscan Alps, where German occupying forces massacred hundreds of civilians during WWII, and follows the daily life of Pacifico, a shepherd born in the wake of the war among those same breathtaking landscapes. Blurring fiction, documentary and collaborative ethnographic observation, the film explores the transient nature of meaning by glimpsing at what Borges calls an Aleph, an allegorical singularity in space and time where past, present and future overlap and intertwine.
