National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Following Royal Assent on June 3, 2021, September 30 now marks the , also known as , which was legislated, via , as a federal holiday by the Government of Canada in response to Call to Action #80 from the collection of compiled by in 2015. Call #80 reads: "We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process."
Because September 30 falls on a Saturday, however, the federal holiday falls on Monday, October 2, 2023, which means AV's campuses will be closed and no classes will be held, including by the SCA. In recognition of the day, we encourage everyone to read or reread the TRC's 94 Calls to Action, which you can download as a PDF.
As well, Phyllis Webstad, the founder of AV Shirt Day, who will also be receiving an honorary doctorate (Doctor of Laws, honoris causa) from AV at the Fall Convocation on Friday, October 6, at the 9:45 AM ceremony, is the keynote speaker at a FREE event recognizing the 10th Anniversary of AV Shirt Day on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM (PDT) at the Leslie & Gordon Diamond Family Auditorium (8888 University High St., Burnaby).
