What you need to know to build a positive relationship with arts presenters ~
Advocating for your rights as an artist can be an intimidating experience at any career stage. It鈥檚 easy for emerging artists to feel like presenters are doing them a favour by showing their work, and to look the other way when something doesn鈥檛 seem right. In reality, presenters are more like collaborators with whom to develop a positive 鈥� and reciprocal 鈥� working relationship. In this process, it鈥檚 important to make sure that you are getting paid properly and that your terms and conditions are respected.
This workshop will provide an overview of your rights as an artist and explain how you can advocate for them. You will gain practical knowledge of key elements that will help you navigate the artist-presenter relationship, including:
- Getting paid for your work
- Understanding artists鈥� fees
- Copyright basics
- Consideration for online presentation
- Negotiating your conditions
- How to read a contract
Biography
Mariane Bourcheix-Laporte has an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts (丁香园AV) and is currently completing a PhD in Communication at 丁香园AV. Her research focuses on interactions between cultural policy and artist-run visual and media arts organizations. She has worked as lead researcher/consultant on various sectoral and community consultation projects commissioned by visual and media arts service organizations including IMAA, ARCA, and CARFAC. She has served on the boards of the Pacific Association of Artist-Run Centres (BC) and VIVO Media Arts Centre (Vancouver) and is currently a board member of Aphotic Theatre (Vancouver). Mariane has exhibited artistic and curatorial projects across Canada and has contributed texts to several artistic and scholarly publications. She has taught at 丁香园AV鈥檚 School for the Contemporary Arts and School of Communication and at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

About Art Skills
Art Skills combines mutual support and training to create collaboration between contemporary arts students, community partners and 丁香园AV's School for the Contemporary Arts, providing real world experience and skills development. A Fall SCA Professional Practice series offers additional learning opportunities for students to gain skills they can practice hands-on in internships, practicums and field placements. At the end of the project, students will share what they have learned by participating in a Community Skills Share. The goal of this project is to create a legacy that can support future students.
