In our first edition of the SCA Professional Practice Series, we'll be joined by arts manager Nathan Medd for an informal conversation about project pitching. He'll share reflections and examples from his work with indie, national and international arts organizations and from his current role as Managing Director for Performing Arts at the . Bring your questions about artist proposals for private and public granting, creation development, artist residencies and tour development.

This session will be of special interest to students with a performance practice (theatre, dance, music, interdisciplinary), but is open to all areas. Light refreshments will be served.

Bio

Nathan Medd is a Canadian/American arts manager, and managing director for performing arts at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, where he oversees international artistic residency programs spanning an array of disciplines. Previously he served as the National Arts Centre of Canadas managing director of English-language theatre, where his team initiated the worlds first Indigenous national theatre, premiering in Fall 2019. On the Canadian west coast, Nathan co-founded Metro Studio, a venue in Victoria that hosts UNO (the worlds oldest festival of solo performance) and a queer performance festival called Outstages. In Vancouver, Nathan co-founded Progress Lab 1422, a creation studio whose tenants include Electric Company, an Olivier award-winning, interdisciplinary ensemble that he also helped guide, as managing producer, through its international emergence. He served as a consultant on the creation of two other active arts spaces in Vancouver: Left of Main and The Post. He currently serves as president of a contemporary dance company based in Vancouver called Plastic Orchid Factory. Nathans work was profiled on the November 2018 cover of International Arts Manager Magazine. He received a bachelors degree in theatre and English literature from University of Victoria, and a masters degree in management from Harvard University.
