The Small File Media Festival is back with our crazy third iteration, this year both online and in person!

Join us from August 9-14 at the 間眅埶AV School for the Contemporary Arts in Vancouver, BC, on the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Watuth nations, for five days of screenings, workshops and musical performances celebrating earth-cooling, PUNK/CHIC small-file eco media. Were going to immerse in tiny movies on the huge screen! We are overjoyed to host the first ever, high-energy Small File Music Showcase with high N-R-G electronic acts Devours, HiNi and the JPEG 2000 Karaoke Explosion on August 12. On August 14 at the festive closing ceremony, well hold the worlds first NSFT* auction! All proceeds will go to the artist, and the owner will receive an ultra-tiny certificate of authentication. With lo-fi augmented reality, friendly wi-fi robots, and the incomparably charming Small File Team in attendance, this years festivities model fun and planet-friendly appropriate technologies.

Friends around the world can partake in small-file fun as in previous years! You can preview NSFT art August 9 14, join the auction August 14, and enjoy the full festival online, August 1 21.

Why small files? Because streaming media is overheating the planet. Networks, data centers, and devices contribute a whopping 4% of greenhouse gas emissions. About a third of that is the infrastructural share that supports streaming media. The whole category is busting out of control as people worldwide, intoxicated by corporate medias siren songs, stream all kinds of media in high definition, video chat, video conference, and play high-resolution online games, not to mention invest in crypto and get hooked on artificial intelligence apps.

Up to now we have been low-key, we have been playing it nice. But the world is broken. This time we are demanding stop fossil fuels dependence bringing war and destruction worldwide!** We are demanding unleash creative r/evolution! We are demanding destroy the large-file clich矇s of thinking that prevent us from imaging a world otherwise!

International media artists both distinguished and emerging responded to this years small-file call for movies that are PUNK/CHICforceful and elegant, streamlined and stealthy, uncompromising in vision, edgy in message. We received over 100 submissions from 18 countries in the categories NSFT art (gleefully lampoon media reliant on fume-belching blockchain); Portals (seed-crystals for rituals and coalitions); the Small-file song contest; and our mind-blowing Other category, in three file sizes! Molecules, infra-small loops and the like, under 1MB; Ripples, works up to 5 MB; and Trouble, bingeworthy series up to 22 MB. As ever, the Small File Team is lovingly curating the accepted works into satisfying thematic programs.

The Small File Media Festival team is Sophia Biedka, Kim Cleroux, Mena El Shazly, Joey Malbon, Laura Marks, Radek Przedpeski, and Faune Ybarra.

* Not So F*ing Tiny

** Large-file streaming media supports the bellicose fossil fuel economy because 79% of world energy derives from fossil fuels. Dont believe the hype about green-at-source internet corporations. The US Energy Information Administration projects a 28% increase in world energy use by 2050, mostly outside the OECD, as populations and incomes rise. Almost every kind of energy consumption will rise: renewable, nuclear, crude oil, natural gas, and petroleum. Renewables will support ONLY THE INCREASE! Fossil fuel production will maintain at a steady state! Even if new electricity generation for data centers, networks, and devices comes from renewable sources, this is in addition to, not replacing, the existing fossil-fuel-powered electricity sources.

Please note: These screenings are not yet rated. Please visit for the full schedule and to find out whether viewer discretion is advised.

Small File Music Showcase featuring Devours, HiNi and JPEG 2000
August 12, 2022 | Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre | Doors at 7:30 PM, music starts 8:00 PM sharp

Join us August 12 and experience the powerful aura of the ultimate dance party - the inaugural Small File Music Showcase! This high N-R-G showcase will be graced by JPEG 2000, HiNi and none other than Vancouver legend, Devours! The entire night will be graced by live sound, lights and visuals and the vibe will be held throughout with stunning interludes of ultimate 90s dance hits.

Devours is the sound of a gay DiY punk channeling his love for slipknot, Britney spears and vintage Nintendo themes into fiery, confessional bedroom electro pop anthems. Expect hits from his latest infectious release, Escape from Planet Devours, a 90s action-blockbuster themed double album about liberating oneself from heteronormativity, depression, loneliness, and mainstream culture.

HiNi is a music producer, singer and rapper whos known for turning chaotic and explosive sounds into music and ideas onstage. Her latest album Kings Way was released just this year and the intensity of her live stage and forward-thinking beats are not to be missed.

JPEG 2000 is an irreverently sincere synthpop duo wearing its heart on its sleeve. Formed by Seth Eggler (Timing X) and Joey Chaos () they are inspired by a shared love of new wave, synthpop, 90s techno and shoegaze and bring their all-new Karaoke Xperience to the Small File stage.

Be advised performances of the event will be documented through film and photography.
