Dr. Evan Caldbick and Richard Rigby receive the 2024 FASS Employee Achievement Award

Congratulations to the 2024 winners of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) Employee Achievement Awards!

Divided into the staff and teaching streams, this award recognizes the dedication and hard work of FASS employees, including staff, faculty and temporary instructors, in their collective service to students.

Among the winners are Psychology's Dr. Evan Caldwick and Richard Rigby. Congratulations to them both!

Term Teaching Award

To recognize term teaching faculty who excel in one or more of the following areas: engaging students in discovery of new knowledge; introducing innovative pedagogical approaches to learning; encouraging and supporting student learning; organizing and delivering an interesting and challenging syllabus; exemplifying collegiality, professionalism, and interdisciplinary respect. 

Dr. Evan Caldbick

A recipient of last year's FASS Employee Achievement - Sessional Instructor Award, Dr. Evan Caldbick's strong interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning manifests in the creative approach he brings to his courses and the respectful learning environment he creates in the classroom. His colleagues at the Department of Psychology commend his dedication to students' academic and personal growth, noting his adaptability and extra support both in and out of the classroom. More than one student has described Caldbick as "the most inspirational teacher" they've encountered and appreciated his ability to make even the toughest courses highly compelling. His use of anecdotes, fun facts, and real-world applications in his lectures transforms challenging material into engaging storytelling that captures his students' attention. 

Message from Evan: I would like to thank my colleagues for their support and trust in me as I continue to grow into my role as a psychology/neuroscience educator. 

Teaching Assistant Award

To recognize a teaching assistant (TA) who excel in one or more of the following areas: engaging students in discovery of new knowledge; introducing innovative pedagogical approaches to learning; encouraging and supporting student learning; organizing and delivering an interesting and challenging syllabus; exemplifying collegiality, professionalism, and interdisciplinary respect. 

Richard Rigby

Praised by professor Rebecca Cobb as one of the most caring and thoughtful teaching Assistants (TA) she has encountered in over 20 years, Rigby has consistently gone above and beyond what is typically called for his position. He helped develop new course assessments, assisted with the creation of a podcast to supplement student learning, and mentored students with compassion and respect. When he took on the newly-created Head TA/Course Coordinator position for PSYC 100, a large entry-level course with about 600 students across two sections, Rigby successfully coordinated and mentored three other TAs. In an illustration of his resourcefulness and forward-thinking mindset, he created and maintains a handbook for future Head TAs to use as a reference and training guide. More than one student nominator has described Rigby as one of the most influential figures in their undergraduate career - changing the trajectory of their career aspirations, cultivating their interest in close relationship research, and inspiring them to pursue graduate school.
