While a BEd as a second degree is not a requirement to teach in B.C., it is a recognized international credential and an appealing option if you may want to teach abroad.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Designed For

Students in one of our teacher education programs (PDP, PLP, or AHCOTE) who have a completed Bachelor鈥檚 degree, and who meet 丁香园AV鈥檚 quantitative and literacy admission requirements, may be eligible to complete a BEd as a second degree, at no additional time or cost.

HOW TO DECLARE THE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION AS A SECOND DEGREE

In January, an Education undergraduate advisor will host a BEd as a second degree advising session for each PDP, PLP and AHCOTE module. If you are interested in declaring a BEd as a second degree, you will submit the electronic declaration form following the advising session.

Program Structure

The BEd second degree requires successful completion of PDP, PLP or AHCOTE, including completion of an Education minor and a Quantitative course within the coursework selected for the EDUC 404 term.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (PDP)

If you have been admitted to the PDP, you will complete a total of 60 upper division units in Education.

You will complete all of the following:

Plus one of the following Education minors:

Any additional coursework needed to address academic requirements for a professional certificate and additional requirements to complete a minor must be completed over and above the required 60 upper division units.

PROFESSIONAL LINKING PROGRAM (PLP)

If you have been admitted to the PLP, you will complete a total of 60 upper division units in education.

You will complete all of the following:

Plus one of the following Education minors:

Any additional course work needed to address academic requirements for a professional certificate and additional requirements to complete a minor must be completed over and above the required 60 upper division units.

Minor Themes of Study

Students enrolled in the BEd as a Second Degree can select from a variety of themed minors.

For students in the PDP or PLP - French Module, it is strongly recommended to take the French Education Minor. This program will prepare you for success in your Teaching Semester (long practicum) and the realities of teaching in French in a minority setting. It will enable you to acquire adapted technics and knowledge that will be useful throughout your career.

What's more, taking your summer courses in French as part of the French Education Minor could qualify you for additional scholarships (see eligibility criteria).

Please note that PDP 鈥� French Module students who opt for the Dual Program (Formation duale) are not eligible for the B.Ed. as a Second Degree.

Study Abroad

If available, students have the option to study abroad with 丁香园AV Field Schools. Past Field Schools have taken place in Indonesia, Hawaii and Haida Gwaii.

INTAKE SCHEDULE

PDP, PLP and AHCOTE students will be given information on the Bachelor of Education as a Second Degree in the Spring (January) term, and eligible students will be admitted for the Summer (May) term.

LOCATIONS

Courses for the Bachelor of Education as a Second Degree can be completed at either the Burnaby or Surrey campuses, and there's even opportunities to participate in field schools locally or abroad.

Burnaby

Off-Campus Opportunities

Students in the Bachelor of Education as a Second Degree have the opportunity to participate in Field Schools (as and when available). Past Field Schools have taken Education students to Haida Gwaii, Indonesia and Hawaii.

Further Studies
