Explore innovations in mathematics education, examine multiple perspectives on teaching and learning of mathematics, and enhance the teaching of mathematics, while learning the latest research and innovations in mathematics education. Through guided methodologies students will be scaffolded in the implementation of this research and innovations into their practice.  

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Designed for

K - 8 teachers of mathematics who are looking to bring their teaching into alignment with the latest research and innovations in mathematics education.

Note: This program is intended for working professionals who are working within their profession throughout the program, therefore may not be suitable for international applicants. See resources for international students.

Program Structure

  • 2 year, 35-unit program
  • Online synchronous classes*
  • Classes meet online one evening per week, and usually run from 4:30 - 9:30 pm
  • Designed for working professionals

*Synchronous classes run in real time, with students and instructors attending together from different locations.

PROGRAM DESIGN & COURSES

Program Design

Designed with working professionals in mind, this two-year degree program offers the opportunity to obtain a high-quality master's degree. Our cohort-based model allows students to work through the program and coursework together (18-24 students).

This program allows students to:

  • examine multiple perspectives on teaching and learning of mathematics
  • explore the latest research and innovations in mathematics education
  • implement this research and innovations into practice to enhance their own teaching of mathematics.

Courses

Students complete:

EDUC 895: Conceptions of Numeracy

Explorations of the notion of numeracy and its role in contemporary society. An examination and enhancement of personal numeracy through immersion in a problem-solving environment. Prerequisite: This course is designed for the MEd program in Numeracy.

EDUC 823: Curriculum & Instruction in an Individual Teaching Specialty

An intensive examination of developments in a curriculum area selected by the student. In addition the course will deal with major philosophical and historical factors that influence the present state and future directions of curriculum and instruction.

EDUC 845: Learning Mathematics with Computer

Experience in incorporating computers in mathematical problem solving, adaptation of materials for use in mathematics classroom.

EDUC 864: Research Designs in Education

Designing and interpreting research about education. Introduction to survey techniques, correlational designs, classic experimental and evaluation designs for investigating causal relations, case study methods, interpretive approaches to research. Students with credit for EDUC 814 may not take this course for further credit. Equivalent Courses: EDUC814

EDUC 904: Fieldwork

Developing and implementing a change in personal instructional practice. Recording, analyzing and reporting the impact on students and self.

EDUC 816: Developing Educational Programs and Practices for Diverse Educational Settings

Investigates theories and issues associated with developing educational programs and practices in various educational contexts. Addresses the development of new programs and their implementation in schools and other educational settings.

EDUC 883: MEd Comprehensive Examination

The examination will entail reflective analysis of the students’ experiences in the form of a portfolio. Further details will follow. The examination is graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.

Courses in this program are offered online synchronously via Zoom. Ensure you have the following minimum technical requirements:
