MEd in Curriculum & Instruction: Ecological Education

Explore a variety of different conceptual frameworks and societal perspectives on the environment and address a range of global issues in this program. Reconnect with the natural and technological environments that sustain us in our emerging post-industrial society through laboratory and research sessions; seminars on important global environmental issues; and independent opportunities for student-led research and guided inquiry both on-campus and in other field locations in the Georgia Basin region.
Designed for
Teachers of all grade levels, adult and community educators, Aboriginal/First Nation educators, outdoor/experiential educators, and other educators such as park interpreters or naturalists.
Note: This program is intended for working professionals who are working within their profession throughout the program, therefore may not be suitable for international applicants.
Program Structure
- 2 year, 35-unit program (seven 5-unit courses)
- In-person classes, normally five to six weekends per term on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and/or Sundays
- Intensive field experiences take place in the Summer terms
- Outdoor field experiences throughout the Lower Mainland and Haida Gwaii in the second year

Program Design
Designed with working professionals in mind, this two-year degree program offers the opportunity to obtain a high-quality master's degree. Our cohort-based model allows students to work through the program and coursework together (18-24 students).
You will be encouraged to consider multiple perspectives on the goals, values and interdisciplinary nature of place-based, indigenous and ecological forms of education, while also obtaining a grounding in models for learning and teaching environmental topics in both school-based and informal settings. Specifically, we consider education ‘for’, ‘in’ and ‘about’ the environment and apply this knowledge to a wide range of formal and informal educational settings.
Courses
Students complete:
EDUC 857-5 ISSUES AND TOPICS IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Examines the origins of environmental education, the range of program offerings, and the educational concepts which appear to underlie them. Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.
EDUC 833-5 SOCIAL AND MORAL PHILOSOPHY IN EDUCATION
An in-depth study of the ethical foundations of education. Areas in education where ethical questions arise are identified and elucidated. Classical and modern moral positions are examined for their adequacy as theories of moral justification. The topics include the value of education, freedom and equality, and moral and values education.
EDUC 816-5 DEVELOPING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND PRACTICES FOR DIVERSE EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS
Investigates theories and issues associated with developing educational programs and practices in various educational contexts. Addresses the development of new programs and their implementation in schools and other educational settings.
EDUC 861-5 STUDY OF LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
This course reviews research on learning environments (also known as classroom climates or classroom ecologies) in terms of psychological and social perspectives on educational experience. Implications for student learning, professional development and evaluating education innovations are examined.
EDUC 830-5 IMPLEMENTATION OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Problems and practices associated with innovation and implementation including the nature of change in the educational context, the roles of teachers, administrators, change agents, and evaluators.
EDUC 904-5 FIELDWORK III
The Faculty Sponsor will provide further information regarding the Fieldwork course.
EDUC 883-5 MED COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION
The examination is graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.
