Collaboratively developed by ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV (¶¡ÏãÔ°AV) and Vancouver Community College (VCC). Both institutions have a commitment to the improvement of teaching and learning in higher education and a desire to foster community engagement in the Province of British Columbia.   

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Designed for

Both new and current instructors that are engaged in post-secondary, community-based adult education, or similar areas of education.

Note: This program is intended for working professionals who are working within their profession throughout the program, therefore may not be suitable for international applicants. See resources for international students.

Program Structure

The Master of Education (MEd) program is designed for practicing educators in the post-secondary system. This two-year degree offers the opportunity to obtain a high quality Masters degree in your local community through a schedule geared to the working professional.

  • Focused on improvement of practice through the study of educational theory, philosophy and practice.
  • The program is co-designed to flexibly accommodate the demanding lifestyles and schedules of today's educational professionals.
  • Cohort-based with seven 5-unit courses over six terms (2 years).
  • Classes meet every second or third weekend on Friday evening and Saturdays at the program location.

PROGRAM DESIGN & COURSES

Program Design

This two-year program is designed to fill the consistent demand for upgrading of qualifications for both academic and non-academic instructors. The program focuses on issues pertaining to theoretical, practical, and research-based aspects of this area of study. 

Learning goals:

  • Evaluate and contribute to relevant educational knowledge and theory
  • Critically understand and apply relevant methods of educational research
  • Apply and refine diverse educational practices
  • Communicate, in various modalities, in accord with the expectations of their discipline
  • Act with responsibility and initiative in both scholarly and professional capacities
  • Enact values of ethical educational engagement, including international engagement, community engagement, and engagement among diverse identities and within marginalized constituencies.

Courses

Students complete:

EDUC 816-5 DEVELOPING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND PRACTICES FOR DIVERSE EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS

Investigates theories and issues associated with developing educational programs and practices in various educational contexts. Addresses the development of new programs and their implementation in schools and other educational settings.

EDUC 822-5 EVALUATION OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Processes used in program evaluation; including test and other measurement devices; and political, social and philosophical issues relating to the evaluation of educational programs.

EDUC 823-5 CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION IN AN INDIVIDUAL TEACHING SPECIALITY

An intensive examination of developments in a curriculum area selected by the student. In addition the course will deal with major philosophical and historical factors that influence the present state and future directions of curriculum and instruction.

EDUC 830-5 IMPLEMENTATION OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Problems and practices associated with innovation and implementation including the nature of change in the educational context, the roles of teachers, administrators, change agents, and evaluators.

EDUC 806-5 SELECTED PROBLEMS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

This course is determined in context with the program.

EDUC 904-5 FIELDWORK III

Graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.
The Faculty Sponsor will provide further information regarding the Fieldwork course.

EDUC 883-5 MED COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION

The examination is graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.

Classes in this program take place at Vancouver Community College.
