Designed for
The Bachelor of Education (BEd) is a first degree program specifically for aspiring teachers.
In addition to degree requirements, BEd students must also be admitted to and successfully complete one of the Faculty of Education Teacher Education programs – Professional Development Program (PDP) or Professional Linking Program (PLP). ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV to the BEd does not guarantee admission to PDP or PLP.
Program Structure
Students can apply for transfer to the BEd after completing a minimum of 60 units. BEd students are required to complete 150 units, with 90 upper division units, including those completed towards PDP or PLP. Students must complete two of: EDUC 220, EDUC 230, EDUC 240, EDUC 250, plus the Major or two Minors option. Once in the PDP or PLP, students must complete one Education Minor and two Designs for Learning courses completed within the PDP or PLP.
Education Major Option
The Education major option requires you to complete a minimum of 150 units. This includes one major from any of the following Faculties:
- Faculty of Applied Sciences
- Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
- Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology
- Faculty of Environment
- Faculty of Science.
You must also complete the following:
1. One minor from the Faculty of Education (may be fully or partially completed during EDUC 404):
- Counselling and Human Development Minor
- Curriculum and Instruction Minor
- Early Learning Minor
- Educational Psychology Minor
- Elementary Generalist Minor
- Environmental Education Minor
- French Education Minor
- International and Global Education Minor
- Learning and Developmental Disabilities Minor
- Physical Education Minor
- Secondary Mathematics Education Minor
- Secondary Teaching Minor
- Social Justice in Education Minor
2. Plus, two of the following courses:
- EDUC 220 - Introduction to Educational Psychology (3 units)
- EDUC 230 - Introduction to Philosophy of Education (3 units)
- EDUC 240 - Social Issues in Education (3 units)
- EDUC 250 - Studies in the History of Education in the Western World (3 units)
3. If you are accepted into the Professional Development Program (PDP), you must also complete:
- EDUC 400 - Foundations of Education and Schooling (15 units)
- EDUC 401W - Introduction to Classroom Teaching (8 units)
- EDUC 402W - Studies of Educational Theory and Practice (7 units)
- EDUC 404 - Coursework semester (15 units)
- EDUC 405 - Teaching semester (15 units)
4. If you are accepted into the Professional Linking Program (PLP), you must also complete:
- EDUC 402W - Studies of Educational Theory and Practice (7 units)
- EDUC 403 - Studies in Teaching and Learning (11 units)
- EDUC 404 - Coursework semester (15 units)
- EDUC 405 - Teaching Semester (15 units)
5. A minimum of 90 units in upper division courses (numbered 300 and 400)
6. At least two educational designs for learning courses
7. A minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.0 and a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 calculated on all upper division courses completed at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV
Note: To complete the BEd Program, you must apply and be accepted into ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's PDP or PLP.
DOUBLE MINOR OR EXTENDED MINOR OPTION
The double minor or extended minors option requires you to complete a minimum of 150 units. This includes two minors/extended minors from any of the following Faculties:
- Faculty of Applied Sciences
- Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
- Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology
- Faculty of Environment
- Faculty of Science.
You must also complete the following:
1. One minor from the Faculty of Education (may be fully or partially completed during EDUC 404):
- Counselling and Human Development Minor

To complete the BEd and get certified as a K-12 teacher in B.C., you must also complete one of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's teacher education programs, either the Professional Development Program (PDP) or the Professional Linking Program (PLP).

Off-Campus Opportunities
Students in the Bachelor of Education have the opportunity to participate in Field Schools (as and when available). Past Field Schools have taken Education students to: Haida Gwaii, Indonesia and Hawaii.

Further Studies
After completing the BEd, obtaining teaching certification and working either as an educator or in other occupations, many individuals return to the Faculty to purse professional development (TQS upgrades) and research opportunities through graduate studies.
