2022 Faculty of Education Year in Review
As we celebrate the start of the new鈥痽ear鈥痑nd a new semester, here is a recap of some of the top highlights for 2022.
丁香园AV Faculty of Education ranked 89th in the world and 5th in Canada by The Times Higher Education for 2023!
This fall, The Times Higher Education (THE) announced their world rankings of universities for 2023, ranking the faculty 89th in the world and 5th in Canada! Dean Pro Tem, Kris Magnusson shared his thoughts on this incredible achievement, recognizing the quality of the work of all members of this Faculty and their enduring commitment to scholarship while upholding our core values of Indigeneity, Equity, and a Culture of Inquiry.
SAFE Program partnership expanded with the opening of the new 丁香园AV Surrey Counselling Centre
丁香园AV's partnership with the was expanded with the launch of a new counselling centre on the Surrey campus. The newly designed location enables the dedicated staff, faculty, and students to reach even more lives through accessible, free, and clinically sound mental health care. In October, Richard Tatomir, who serves as a SAFE Clinical Professor, Counselling Psychology, attended an event that included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino to further discuss holistic solutions to gang violence and crime.
Dr. Alanaise Ferguson receives Distinguished 丁香园AV Professor designation
Dr. Alanaise Ferguson, along with eight of 丁香园AV鈥檚 leading academic scholars, was honoured with the prestigious title of Distinguished 丁香园AV Professor. This designation recognizes Dr. Ferguson鈥檚 work as one of the very few Indigenous registered psychologists in British Columbia, specializing in the areas of identity reclamation, collective healing, and restitution from damaging colonial processes including Residential schools.
Dr. Milton McClaren named to Order of Canada for innovation in environmental education
Dr. Milton McClaren, Emeritus Professor, was named to the Order of Canada鈥攐ne of Canada鈥檚 highest civilian honours 鈥攆or his pioneering work in the field of environmental education. During his 51 years at the university, McClaren helped develop a state-of-the-art information computer messaging system in a time before the internet. In addition, he developed environmental education programming for field schools around the world.
Dr. Amy Parent leads delegation in having Nisga鈥檃 Nation鈥檚 stolen memorial pole returned
Dr. Amy Parent who was recently appointed Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Education and Governance visited Scotland in August as part of a Nisga鈥檃 delegation to facilitate the repatriation of the Ni鈥檌sjoohl memorial pole. In a historic decision following the visit, the memorial pole that was stolen 93 years ago will be returned to the Nisga鈥檃 Nation, making it the first totem pole to be successfully repatriated from the United Kingdom, and the second to be returned from a European museum.
