Biography
Dr. Jeff Sugarman joined the Faculty of Education in 1998 and is also Associate Member of the Department of Psychology. His work bridges psychology, philosophy, history, and education. He is a Past President of the Society for Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology (Division 24 of the American Psychological Association) and former Associate Editor of the Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology and New Ideas in Psychology. He is co-editor of A Humanities Approach to the Psychology of Personhood (2020, Routledge) and the Wiley Handbook of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology (2015, Wiley-Blackwell) and co-author of Persons: Understanding Psychological Selfhood and Agency (2010, Springer), Psychology and the Question of Agency (2003, SUNY Press), and The Psychology of Human Possibility and Constraint (1999, SUNY Press).
Research Interests
Dr. Sugarman鈥檚 scholarship is concerned with the psychology of personhood, selfhood, and human agency; the sociopolitical dimenstions of psychology; psychology鈥檚 influence in educational institutions; development of a critical psychology of education; and the application of historical ontology and hermeneutics to psychological inquiry.
