Master of Education
MEd in Curriculum & Instruction: Health Education & Active Living

Explore active and interactive ways of maintaining health, vitality and well-being while learning to integrate scholarly inquiry with your personal and professional aspirations. Approach Indigenous ways of being through practices of active and healthy living.
Designed for
School-based health education and physical education teachers, community leaders, community leisure service workers, health care professionals, body-based therapists, hospital personnel such as dieticians and nurses, recreation leaders, holistic health practitioners and college instructors.
Note: This program is intended for working professionals who are working within their profession throughout the program, therefore may not be suitable for international applicants. See resources for international students.
Program Structure
- 2 year, 35-unit program (7 5-unit courses)
- In-person classes, normally five to six weekends per term on Friday evenings and Saturdays
- Hands-on, engaged, interactive, experiential, place-based and flexible teaching and learning processes are incorporated across the courses

Program Design
Designed with working professionals in mind, this two-year degree program offers the opportunity to obtain a high-quality master's degree. Our cohort-based model allows students to work through the program and coursework together (18-24 students).
This program allows students to:
- Comprehend philosophies, theoretical frameworks, principles and practices of health promotion that are in keeping with the attainment of embodied well-being and the expression of vitality in active living.
- Develop curricular and instructional understandings used to design, plan, implement and evaluate health promotion programs in schools, community settings and other institutional contexts.
- Deepen understandings of Indigenous, holistic, healing traditions and their contributions to current theories and concepts of health, wellness, and community-engaged living.
- Focus on Indigenous understandings of land, community, spirituality and ceremony in healing and as being intrinsic to the right to well-being.
- Explore self-care as the mainstay of health education and active living through theoretically-informed, arts-infused, Indigenously-respectful, ecologically-minded, somatically-grounded sense of care that includes the self, others, and care for the more-than-human world.

EDUC 820-5 CURRENT ISSUES IN CURRICULUM & PEDAGOGY: CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS OF HEALTH EDUCATION AND ACTIVE LIVING
Focuses on educational issues, trends and practices which impact teaching and learning in schools and other educational settings.
EDUC 816-5 DEVELOPING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS & PRACTICES FOR DIVERSE EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS: MODELS AND THEORIES OF HEALTH EDUCATION AND ACTIVE LIVING
Investigates theories and issues associated with developing educational programs and practices in various educational contexts. Addresses the development of new programs and their implementation in schools and other educational settings.
EDUC 823-5 CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION IN AN INDIVIDUAL TEACHING SPECIALTY: MODELS AND THEORIES OF HEALTH EDUCATION AND ACTIVE LIVING
An intensive examination of developments in a curriculum area selected by the student. In addition the course will deal with major philosophical and historical factors that influence the present state and future directions of curriculum and instruction.
EDUC 843-5 EMBODIMENT AND CURRICULUM INQUIRY
The scholarship on embodiment and its implications for the body as a site for knowledge and its relationship to contemporary curriculum inquiry will be studied with specific emphasis on the area of performative and narrative inquiry and arts education. Central to this course will be the investigation of embodiment from both a philosophical perspective and a literary/poetic perspective. Equivalent Courses: EDUC712
EDUC 830-5 IMPLEMENTATION OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Problems and practices associated with innovation and implementation including the nature of change in the educational context, the roles of teachers, administrators, change agents, and evaluators.
EDUC 904-5 FIELDWORK III
The Faculty Sponsor will provide further information regarding the Fieldwork course.
EDUC 883-5 MED COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION
The examination is graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.
