Faculty of Education Heat Winners 2023: 3 Minute Thesis Competition
The Faculty of Education's Graduate Studies is delighted to announce the results of the 2023 3MT: Faculty of Education Heat competition!
We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Celeste Snowber who served as the MC and to Drs. Joel Heng Hartse, Jeannie Kerr and Yumiko Murai who undertook the challenging task of ranking the participants based on specific criteria. Additionally, we extend our appreciation to the audience for selecting their favorite contender for the People's Choice award.
Congratulations to Iris Yu and Alex Vanderveen who will be representing the Faculty in the 3MT 丁香园AV Finals. The finals will take place online and in-person at the Big Data Hub (ASB 10900) on April 5, 2023 from 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM.

Topic: Understanding First-Year First-Generation Students' Experiences of Peer Mentoring at a Canadian University During the COVID-19 Pandemic
"The 3MT was a great opportunity to practice sharing research as a story with a non-specialist audience. I believe it is important to make research accessible, understandable and useful for people who wish to address a real-life problem. I am grateful for being able to represent the Faculty of Education in the 丁香园AV finals, and I look forward to sharing my research with a wider audience."

"Distilling a 30-page literature review down to 3 minutes was an exhilarating, fun and insightful challenge! Thank you to all who helped me prepare for the Education 3MT heat, offering words of encouragement, enthusiasm, feedback and support. I鈥檓 looking forward to presenting at the finals and learning about all the amazing research being undertaken by my fellow graduate students."

Topic: Making Friends with Strangeness: Practices of Mastery within an Ontology of Abundance
"I'm thrilled people connected with my talk about mastery and strangeness; it reassures me I condensed three years of doctoral research into a relatable and maybe even entertaining format. One never knows until the public weighs in, so it's an honor to receive the People's Choice Award. Thank you People! I love you! There were lots of staff, faculty and students in the audience with whom I engaged directly during those 180 seconds. I felt suspended in time, my face was burning, it was an insanely-focused experience. I recommend the 3MT to anyone once they have a semi-clear idea of their research area. It crystalized my thinking around my doctoral thesis that I completed last November and has opened my mind to future talks and publications about my topic. Congratulations to Iris and Alex for placing first and second, and to fellow participants Michael, Linda and Parsa. I learned a lot from watching all five of you present."
