Empowering Canadian Youth: Friends of Simon Receives 2023 Ted Rogers Community Grant
Congratulations to Friends of Simon on being awarded the 2023 Ted Rogers Community Grant!
play a crucial role in supporting registered charities and non-profits dedicated to empowering youth aged 12-29. These grants facilitate programs in education, health and sport, entrepreneurship, and digital literacy, to enable Canadian youth to reach their highest potential.
Amrit Cojocaru, the Program Coordinator, expressed her excitement upon learning the news, stating, "I was thrilled to hear we received this grant. Friends of Simon operates solely on 100% donor funding. This financial support enables the organization to establish additional school sites, hire more tutors, and extend its reach to more school-aged students. The Ted Rogers Community Grant is instrumental in reaching out to schools patiently waiting for tutors, bringing them the much-awaited good news."
Friends of Simon, an award-winning Faculty of Education program launched in 2006, recruits, prepares, and assigns university students as literacy tutors in the Lower Mainland, with a particular focus on newcomer K-12 students.
Collaborating with various sites, Friends of Simon aims to enhance school success through after-school, Saturday, and summer programs conducted in small groups and individualized settings. The instructional approach is rooted in contemporary pedagogical trends, with tutors receiving training and supervision from Faculty of Education members actively engaged in educational research.
