Dr. Roland Case receives Governor General Medal

April 28, 2021

Congratulations to Dr. Roland Case! Dr. Case, a retired professor in the Education faculty, and co-founder and former executive director of  has been awarded the .

Meritorious Service Decorations recognize Canadians for exceptional deeds accomplished over a limited period of time that bring honour to the country, recognizing contributions from advocacy initiatives and health care services, to research and humanitarian efforts.

Dr. Cases work in education and re-imagining teaching and learning to focus on nurturing thinking in all students has resulted in a transformative impact on education in every province and territory in Canada.

The award was a lovely surprise and a wonderful acknowledgment of our Consortiums 25-year effort to support teachers in implementing critical thinking, says Case. The only drawback with awards such as this is that they typically single out one person when in fact many individuals deserve recognition. I would like to especially acknowledge my collaborators in co-developing the conception of critical thinking that has been the foundation for our efforts: Professors LeRoi Daniels and Jerrold Coombs of the University of British Columbia and Sharon Bailin of 間眅埶AV. In addition, credit goes to Garfield Gini-Newman of OISE/UT who was an early champion of our work in Canada and internationally and to Usha James who has taken over from me as Executive Director to ably lead and expand the reach of the Consortium.
