Education researchers receive over $175,000 in 2020 Insight Development Grants
Congratulations to Drs. Sean Chorney, Joel Heng Hartse and Krista Socholotiuk, recipients of the Social Sciences and Humanities Council (SSHRC) .
The grants, awarded to emerging and established scholars, provide valuable support for long-term research initiatives that address complex issues about individuals and societies.
Dr. Chorney's research aims to advance mathematics education in secondary schools by implementing mathematizing to enable social awareness and help students learn mathematical curricular content.
- Principle investigator: Dr. Sean Chorney
- Amount: $51,340
- Project title: Mathematizing social issues in Canadian secondary schools
Dr. Henge Hartse's research investigates the increasingly prominent role of private, for-profit companies offering "private academic support services" (PASS) and how international students use and perceive these services.
- Principle investigator: Dr. Joel Heng Hartse
- Co-investigator: Dr. Sandra ZappaÂ-Hollman & Dr. Tim Anderson
- Amount: $55,973
- Project title: Underground literacies: The use of private academic support services by International EAL students
Dr. Socholotiuk's research will evaluate and study how therapeutic relationships are intersubjectively negotiated in cross-cultural dyads, driven by the research question: What are the in-session processes and actions taken by clients from non-dominant cultural groups and professional counsellors who are not from the same cultural group, in developing and forming their helping relationship early in counselling sessions?
- Principle investigator: Dr. Krista Socholotiuk
