GDE in Frameworks for Innovative Teacher Collaboration and Inquiry

"The field studies at the core of this GDE have given me both the structure and the freedom to explore teaching practices that have an immediate impact on my daily work in the classroom."

I am a secondary science teacher, a mom, and a lifelong Girl Guide. Through my field studies, I am working with a small team at my school to create a highly supportive adapted course for students who struggle with numeracy. Through our math & science classes, we are building students' confidence and skill set. We're using manipulatives, demos, visuals, adapted reading material, and a targeted curriculum to help us meet our goals. We're also teaching study skills and some self-regulation. It's a busy and ever-changing classroom!

The Graduate Diploma in Education (GDE) in Frameworks for Innovative Teacher Collaboration and Inquiry was offered in coordination with my school district. I have been teaching long enough to identify areas of my practice I'm comfortable with, and a number of areas where I'd like to experiment/expand. The field studies at the core of this GDE have given me both the structure and the freedom to explore teaching practices that have an immediate impact on my daily work in the classroom.

I most enjoyed working with Joanne Robertson, one of the Faculty Associates in the program. She introduced us to a variety of frameworks for teaching and learning and was highly knowledgeable and helped us to delve deeply into a number of systems. She had high expectations of us, but gave us valuable support and feedback along the way.

The world is changing daily. My curriculum is not stagnant, nor should my teaching methods be. Every group of students has new interests, experiences, and challenges; I want them to find science engaging, relevant, and accessible... and that doesn't look the same for any two groups! Also, the cycle of learning keeps me interested in what I'm doing.

If I were talking to prospective students considering graduate school with the Faculty of Education I would tell them: If there are projects that have been simmering in your mind but you just haven't found the time to make them reality, this program can give you the structure to follow through. It will also connect you with a great community of enthusiastic and knowledgeable educators.
