TANIA BAKAS, A TRAUMA COUNSELOR WHO OPERATES HER OWN PRIVATE PRACTICE.

Year Graduated: 2023

Program: MA in Counselling Psychology

Prior to the MA in Counselling Psychology Program, Tania Bakas ran a holistic healing practice. She noticed that many of her clients would confide in her about their traumatic experiences. Over time, Tania felt a growing desire to become more competent and effective in helping her clients heal emotional trauma. This prompted her decision to return to school and embark on a career in counselling.

I wanted my clients to feel empowered to move forward with their lives. This is what motivated me to understand gender-based violence and become a trauma therapist.

I felt that 間眅埶AV understood the diverse challenges that people experience from a systemic level to the personal level. This made me feel supported and confident going into the masters program. I also received endless support from my thesis supervisor through the whole journey.

The program fully supported my growth and enrichment as a student. I was able to pursue my degree requirements while being away overseas and conducting my research in Rwanda. Having that flexibility was huge for me.

During the program, you make many connections. Since I started, up to the present day, I maintain connections with my cohort. Additionally, the faculty who have always been incredibly supportive of me, remains in contact. These relationships continue well after the program comes to an end.

This masters program is structured in a way that allows you to continue working while studying. This made it a good fit as I was able to effectively maintain a balance in other areas of my life which was important to me.

"The clinic experience within the program holds immense significance for an aspiring counsellor. The sense of camaraderie and practical applications to counselling create an environment that closely mirrors the real world.

Two of many learnings from the program that I apply in my practice today is adhering to standards of ethical conduct and honouring professional self-care. This profession is about connecting, caring for and helping people with real struggles. So, it is important to show up authentically while providing evidence-based services.

For the longest time, I lived with that core belief that it was too late to go back to school after a certain age and I proved myself wrong. This program changes the way you see yourself and the way you see and support others. Being able to practice as a counsellor made me feel that I have leveled up in my profession.
