As a former French immersion student, Sofie understood the importance and opportunities that come from learning one of Canadas official languages, so when she heard about the French module in the Professional Development Program (PDP), she was intrigued.

I knew that I really wanted to pursue French teaching and 間眅埶AV provided me the avenue to do just that, says Sofie. Yes, the PDP might be longer than some other programs at 16 months, but it also gave me different opportunities to explore different facets of education along with French culture and language I would not have learned nor experienced otherwise.

The PDP French module focuses on issues specific to teaching in French in British Columbia and prepares student teachers to instruct Core French, French Immersion or Programme Francophone at the elementary or secondary level.

Supported by 間眅埶AVs Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (OFFA), student teachers in the PDP French module have access to weekly, personalized linguistic and linguistic identity support sessions, known as Content and Language Integrated Competency or CLIC, to help bolster their confidence and continually improve their French proficiency.

OFFA and CLIC were always our biggest cheerleaders. It was great to have a French community close to us that really wanted us to succeed as French teachers, says Sofie. CLIC provided us with a chance to address our vulnerabilities going into our careers as French teachers and learn how to grow from them as we began prepping for our practicums. We learned the significance of community and establishing a network of support early on in the PDP experience. I know we will be there for each other throughout our next steps in our career as a result.

For Sofie, having this ongoing support system in place early in the program proved to be critical, especially during difficult times she encountered while student teaching during COVID-19.

The most challenging part of the program was learning to adapt and deal with uncertainty. It took a little bit of time and required a learning curve but learning to be flexible with whatever gets thrown your way is a huge part of what it means to be an educator. Teachers dont get enough credit for hoping for plan A while preparing themselves for plans B through Z.

Despite the obstacles she faced student teaching and learning during the pandemic, thanks to the support she received from her colleagues, the CLIC and OFFA community along with the tools and skills she obtained from the program, Sofie was able to persevere and thrive, taking those opportunities to absorb, grow, make mistakes, and eventually learn from them which will serve her well as she enters the field and pursues a career teaching French in British Columbia.

Getting her teaching certification has opened a world of possibilities for Sofie to explore as she begins her teaching journey in a province where French teachers remain in high demand. There are so many avenues to pursue within a career in education, says Sofie. I plan to spend time getting to know my preferred school districts, and eventually find a high school teaching position for Core French. I also plan to continue exploring more of the language and culture within this profession in the coming years.

Reflecting on her time studying in the PDP French module and the ups and downs she encountered, Sofie sums it up best:

Pursuing the French program through 間眅埶AV was one of the more impactful decisions I could have made in terms of my education. Dont get me wrong, it was not easy. There were some challenging times throughout both of my practicums and throughout my time in PDP as a whole. However, I truly believe that it is through adversities that we grow the most. I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude to all of my faculty advisors, my professors, my colleagues, and my school associate who not only believed in all of us but pushed us to learn and grow throughout the program.

竄 Je savais que je voulais vraiment poursuivre une carri癡re en enseignement en fran癟ais et 間眅埶AV men a donn矇 les moyens 罈, explique Sofie. 竄 Oui, le PDP est peut-礙tre plus long que dautres programmes, mais il ma aussi donn矇 de nombreuses occasions dexplorer diff矇rentes facettes de l矇ducation, de la langue et des cultures francophones que je naurais pas acquises ou v矇cues autrement. 罈

Le PDP module fran癟ais met laccent sur des enjeux pr矇cis concernant lenseignement en fran癟ais en Colombie-Britannique et pr矇pare les 矇tudiants-ma簾tres enseigner le fran癟ais de base, limmersion fran癟aise ou le programme francophone au niveau primaire ou secondaire.

Appuy矇s par le Bureau des affaires francophones et francophiles (BAFF) de 間眅埶AV, les 矇tudiants-ma簾tres du PDP module fran癟ais ont acc癡s des s矇ances hebdomadaires personnalis矇es de soutien linguistique et didentit矇 linguistique, connues sous le nom de Comp矇tence langagi癡re int矇gr矇e au contenu ou CLIC, afin daccro簾tre leur confiance et dam矇liorer continuellement leurs comp矇tences en fran癟ais.

竄 Le BAFF et le programme CLIC ont toujours constitu矇 nos meneuses de claques les plus 矇patantes. C矇tait formidable davoir une communaut矇 en fran癟ais proche de nous qui voulait vraiment que nous r矇ussissions en tant quenseignants de fran癟ais 罈, dit Sofie. 竄 Le CLIC nous a permis de nous pencher sur nos vuln矇rabilit矇s en tant quenseignants de fran癟ais et dapprendre grandir partir delles en nous pr矇parant pour nos stages. Nous avons appris limportance de la communaut矇 et nous avons 矇tabli un r矇seau de soutien d癡s le d矇but de lexp矇rience du PDP. Je sais que nous serons l les uns pour les autres tout au long des prochaines 矇tapes de notre carri癡re. 罈

Pour Sofie, la mise en place de ce syst癡me de soutien continu au d矇but du programme sest av矇r矇e cruciale, surtout dans les moments difficiles quelle a rencontr矇s pendant ses 矇tudes en temps de pand矇mie de COVID-19.

竄 La partie la plus difficile du programme a 矇t矇 dapprendre faire face lincertitude et sy adapter. Il a fallu un peu de temps et cela a exig矇 une p矇riode dapprentissage, mais apprendre 礙tre flexible avec tout ce qui se pr矇sente sur son chemin est une grande partie du travail d矇ducateur. Les enseignants m矇ritent quon reconnaisse que tout en misant sur un plan A, ils se pr矇parent toujours aux plans B Z.

Malgr矇 les obstacles auxquels elle a d羶 faire face dans ses 矇tudes pendant la pand矇mie, elle remercie le soutien quelle a re癟u de ses coll癡gues, du programme CLIC et du BAFF ainsi que les comp矇tences et les outils quelle a acquis gr璽ce ce programme. Sofie a su pers矇v矇rer et s矇panouir, profitant de ces occasions pour senrichir, grandir, faire des erreurs et, en d矇finitive, apprendre delles, ce qui lui servira bien lorsquelle sera sur le terrain et poursuivra une carri癡re denseignante de fran癟ais en Colombie-Britannique.

Lobtention de son certificat en enseignement lui a ouvert un monde de possibilit矇s explorer puisquelle entreprend son parcours professionnel dans une province o羅 les enseignants de fran癟ais sont tr癡s pris矇s. 竄 Il y a tellement de chemins emprunter dans une carri癡re en 矇ducation, dit Sofie. 罈 Jai lintention de prendre le temps de bien conna簾tre mes conseils scolaires pr矇f矇r矇s, afin de postuler comme enseignante de fran癟ais de base au secondaire. Jai 矇galement lintention de continuer dapprofondir la langue et la culture au sein de cette profession au cours des prochaines ann矇es.

En repensant ses 矇tudes au programme PDP - module fran癟ais ainsi quaux hauts et aux bas quelle a travers矇s, voici le r矇sum矇 que Sofie en fait :

竄 tudier dans le programme en fran癟ais de 間眅埶AV a 矇t矇 lune des d矇cisions les plus importantes en ce qui concerne mes 矇tudes. 罈 竄 Comprenez-moi bien, je ne dis pas que c矇tait facile. Il y a eu des moments difficiles tout au long de mes deux stages et durant le programme PDP dans son ensemble. Cependant, je crois sinc癡rement que cest dans ladversit矇 quon grandit le plus. Je ressens 矇norm矇ment de gratitude envers tous mes conseillers p矇dagogiques, mes professeurs, mes coll癡gues et mon ma簾tre-associ矇 qui non seulement croyaient en chacun de nous, mais qui nous ont pouss矇s apprendre et grandir tout au long du programme. 罈
