Faculty of Education and You: Linda Rohr

LINDA ROHR, A CONTINUING PHD STUDENT AND TEACHING ASSISTANT.

Year Graduated: 2023

Program: MA in Educational Psychology

Linda Rohr has had an extensive journey before completing the Master of Arts in Educational Psychology. Before coming to the Faculty of Education, she completed a masters in engineering, taught English as a lecturer in Thailand and has become a mom of twins. During her maternity leave, she explored her interests in psychology through online courses. That is when she decided to pursue a master's degree in educational psychology.

My experience in the program has made me realize that becoming a good educational psychologist is an ongoing process of self-improvement. This program allowed me to delve deeply into ones own thoughts and life. It also made me develop a heightened sense of empathy towards others' journey.

The program gave me the opportunity to see behind the curtains and to think in more humane ways about education. I had a realization of the importance of passion and patience. Being patient and dedicating time to practicing reflection and metacognition is just as important as being passionate.

The faculty was very flexible and considerate when accommodating my life as a mom. Dr. Phil Winne gave me invaluable advice on structuring a course schedule that worked with my busy lifestyle and on navigating life in academia. During the pandemic, my supervisor, Dr. Robyn Ilten-Gee, generously prepared recordings and extended invitations to engage in online discussions while I was stuck in Budapest and its time zone.

It was a great gift to be able to develop relationships with the professors in the faculty. It offered me the chance to witness their thinking patterns and how they approach data in a scientific way.

I advise any future Faculty of Education students to not be afraid to approach their professors. It is truly at the essence of our education. Therefore, you can, and you should.

Working with Dr. Robyn Ilten-Gee opened so many doors for me. I was able to be a research assistant on various projects. She supported me and gave me professional guidance while offering me the freedom to explore and learn from my own mistakes.

A valuable competency I gained from the program is becoming more analytical, especially with human subjects. My experience has helped me to develop my analytical skills and to apply them in the context of social studies.

Completing this master's program has guided me along a path that aligns with my aspirations for the future. Embarking on my PhD journey, I feel that I am exactly where I am meant to be.
