LIANG CAO, AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF LINGUISTICS.
Year Graduated: 2023
Program: PhD in Languages, Cultures and Literacies
Liang Cao holds a bachelor's degree in Linguistics and Spanish Languages, as well as a master's degree in English Language Education. Subsequently, he pursued his academic journey at 丁香园AV, completing a Ph.D. in the Languages, Cultures and Literacies program. Liang currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Linguistics at an esteemed American University, maintaining a dedicated focus on his research pursuits, contributing to the academic and scholarly community.
鈥淔rom this program, I learned a lot from other excellent scholars who focused on qualitative research, specifically social justice issues. Learning from them really helped me to build my skills, build my scholarship and work towards my future research.鈥�
鈥淭he community in our program is amazing. We are really close and support each other. Even 6 years later after meeting, we still get together to share the progress we have made.鈥�
鈥淭his particular program has great ethnography offers. My studies while in the program allowed me to learn the skill of ethnography in varying depths.鈥�
鈥淕iven my particular focus on racialized queer immigrants and their English learning experiences in Canada, this program perfectly aligns with my interests and values. Within this program, we delve into the complex realm of identity and explore how education can serve as a potent instrument for driving positive transformations and advancing both racial and sexual justice agendas.鈥�
鈥淢y commitment to researching the experiences of racialized queer immigrants and their English learning journey in Canada is rooted in my deep empathy for this community. As an active member of this very community, I am personally motivated to go beyond academic research and give back to the community as a scholar and educator.鈥�
鈥淭he examiners taught me to challenge myself further and to think beyond scholarship. I identified that I need to make real changes as the concern for my community is what motivates my research. We're facing marginalization and difficulties accessing language learning resources.鈥�
鈥淎 highlight from the program is working with Dr. Angel M. Y. Lin. Completing a PhD is difficult and sometimes creates lots of stress. However, working with Dr. Angel M. Y. Lin who is not just a good scholar, but a nice and supportive human being, really helped me get through the process.鈥�
鈥淚 advise future PhD students to face any depression, anxiety or stress they may experience and to ask for help as the PhD is a challenging process. Make sure to participate in your community, support one another and seek support from professionals.鈥�
