Previous Peer Mentor
Christina Lim
Graduated: 2021
I decided to become a peer mentor because I remembered how daunting it was to be a first-year student, so I wanted the opportunity to help other first years with their transition to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV! I also really enjoy getting to know other people within my faculty, and I absolutely love helping other people.
What is your best first year memory?
My best first year memory would probably be exploring the Burnaby campus for the first time. I loved exploring all the little side halls and secret corridors at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, and stumbling upon secluded areas with gorgeous views. I remember on my first day at the Burnaby campus, I was lost in the AQ and couldn’t even figure out how to leave the building to go home! Luckily, I was with a friend so we were lost together, but we still laugh about it to this day.
Words of advice to new students?
I know they are probably tired of hearing this… but get involved!! ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV has so many different clubs that you are bound to find a club that you’re at least a little bit interested in. Even if you’re not sure if you like a particular club, sign up for it anyways and go to a club meeting or two. Who knows, maybe you can make a lifelong friend or two! Worst comes to worst, you can just stop going to the meetings and try a different club.
Another thing I would recommend new Education students to do is attend as many Education events as you can! They are always super fun to attend and it’s okay if you go alone - everyone there is always super kind and welcoming.
What are you involved in on and off campus?
Currently, I’m working at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s Friends of Simon tutoring program, where we go to different schools across the lower mainland and tutor at-risk students such as immigrants and refugees. On the side, I am also a piano teacher and have been teaching for about 8 years. I have also been involved with ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s Exchange Buddy program and I have volunteered at Elementary schools in the past.
