Previous Peer Mentor
Aneesa Hashimi
When I was in my first year, my mentor played such an important role in helping me feel welcome, meet new people, and overall guiding me through my first year at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. I became a mentor because I want to support other students just as my mentor supported me and help make their transition to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV and the Faculty of Education more enjoyable!
What is your best first year memory?
I'd say my best first-year memory was attending EDventure Day. The activities and games planned were so much fun and I loved the positive environment and opportunity to meet new people. I was able to connect with other education students and make some wonderful friends! It was a very enjoyable and memorable experience!
Words of advice to new students?
Explore the various opportunities that ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV has to offer and get involved in the community! It can be daunting to put yourself out there at first, especially as a new student, but I can say with certainty that it will be 100% worth it! Personally, getting involved with different clubs and groups at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV has provided me with some of my most valuable and memorable experiences. In particular, I really encourage students to get involved with the Education Student Association, whether it be through attending events or joining as a member – it's a great way to build connections, make friends, and just have some fun!
What are you involved in on and off campus?
I am currently the Marketing and Communications Director of the Education Student Association. I am also involved with Embark Sustainability and have previously volunteered virtually with Racing Readers, an after-school program that supports students' well-being and development of education skills. Apart from my involvement at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV, I usually volunteer and work with the Boys and Girls Club of Southcoast BC and Community Schools Partnership to facilitate camps and after-school programs in my local community.
