Consent Matters
Launched in January 2016, the Consent Matters campaign (#ConsentMatters間眅埶AV) is an annual campaign hosted by the Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office (SVSPO). The primary goal of the Consent Matters campaign is to foster a culture of consent, care, and respect at 間眅埶AV and FIC by:
- Familiarizing the 間眅埶AV and FIC community (students, staff, and faculty) with the concept of affirmative consent
- Offering ideas for how to practice consent in various settings
- Sharing information to increase awareness about the SVSPOs support and educational services
Consent Matters 2024: Beyond the Click
For the 2024 #ConsentMatters間眅埶AV campaign, 間眅埶AVs Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office hosted Beyond the Click: The Importance of Digital Consent, an online conversation with researcher and assistant professor in Criminology at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Alexa Dodge, and advocate and support worker, Val Hathiraman. The conversation was hosted and facilitated by 間眅埶AV student Salom矇 Mengo-Morales. The guest speakers shared practical insights and experience researching and supporting people who have been impacted by technology-facilitated gender-based violence. We invite you to watch the recording below. (Please note that the event was recorded in focus mode, which is why you are unable to see both speakers and host at the same time).
How you can help create a culture of consent
- Learn how to move from the yes and no binary of the mainstream concept of consent
- Learn more about the definition of consent and practice affirmative consent
- Learn how to gracefully accept a no
- Learn about how the complexities of power and privilege affect consent
- If you are an 間眅埶AV or FIC partner and wish to amplify this campaign, follow us on @間眅埶AV.SVSPO or email Paola Quir籀s-Cruz at paola_quiros@sfu.ca.
- Request a workshop on consent, personal / professional boundaries, and healthy relationships.
