50th Anniversary Alumni Celebration

As part of our 50th Anniversary, we invited all School of Communication alumni to join us at our Alumni Celebration at the Segal Centre Room 1400, located at the 間眅埶AV Harbour Centre Campus (515 W Hastings St, Vancouver, BC V6B 5K3) on November 3rd. The night included faculty talks, spotlighted alumni, cocktails, and more!

About our faculty presenters:

Martin Laba is an award-winning teacher in the School of Communication who conducts research in two major areas of the discipline: applied communication for social issues (research and design of public engagement for urgent and critical social issues); and educational development and design for media/communication studies.


Victoria E. Thomas is an Assistant Professor of Media and Public Engagement in the School of Communication. As an interdisciplinary scholar of Black Popular Cultural Studies, she primarily analyzes popular media to articulate how visual culture represents Blackness and Black identities. Her research is committed to political and civic engagement, diversity, and inclusion in public institutions to transform societal conditions.

Simi Sara is a Canadian radio and television broadcaster, currently a talk radio host on of the The Simi Sara Show on CKNW Radio prior to that she spent 10 years in local television co-hosting CityTVs Breakfast Television.

Shad (Shadrach Kabango) is a Rwandan-Canadian recording artist. He has released 7 full-length albums, earning a Juno Award for Rap Recording Of The Year in 2011. Five of his albums have been shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize for the best Canadian album of the year--the most shortlist nominations of any artist in the prizes history. Outside of recording and performing his own music, Shad has hosted the CBC Radio program Q and hosts the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning Netflix docu-series Hip-Hop Evolution.
