Effective Strategies for Instructors

Empowering multilingual students to succeed involves thoughtful adjustments in educational approaches. By adopting linguistically responsive pedagogy, instructors can create more inclusive and accessible learning environments for all multilingual students.

Some of the ways we can help instructors include:

• Redesigning assessments, for example by reducing linguistic complexity in multiple-choice questions and rubrics
• Scaffolding assignments so students are better prepared to successfully complete them
• Surfacing understanding and usage of disciplinary language
• Exploring ways to give effective and efficient feedback

Professional Development Opportunities for Instructors

We offer a range of programming to support instructors who teach multilingual students. This includes:

Linguistically Responsive Classrooms: Instructor Series

LRC:IS is designed to assist 丁香园AV faculty in supporting the success of multilingual students in their courses by boosting their own confidence in making classroom, course and assessment language more accessible, strengthening their role in teaching disciplinary language skills, and coming away with a peer-reviewed artifact to add to their teaching portfolio. The program consists of six 90-minute seminars, a one-on-one coaching consultation, guest speakers, and plenty of faculty driven discussion.

The aim of this new Community of Practice is to offer a space for 丁香园AV鈥檚 multilingual and international faculty members to come together to share classroom experiences, refine teaching expertise and build community through multilingual and international perspectives in a collegial and supportive way. We meet monthly, in person or online during the spring and summer terms, starting with the initial goal of establishing an organizing agenda responsive to the group鈥檚 needs.
