Multilingual TA Workshop Series

Description 

This series of workshops is designed for multilingual and international graduate students who are working as either new or current teaching assistants. They have been designed thematically to offer support in improving TA teaching and facilitation skills across disciplines in your roles as Teaching Assistants at 間眅埶AV. In these sessions, youll join other grad students to learn new teaching skills, share your experiences and build community. Aligned with 間眅埶AVs equity, diversity and inclusion priorities, the Multilingual Teaching Assistant workshops are offered throughout the academic year; all multilingual teaching assistants are warmly invited to participate.

Multilingual and International TAs: Language for Facilitating Tutorials

Summary

This session offers multilingual TAs hands-on support with developing and practicing facilitation language skills for tutorials.

Calling all multilingual Teaching Assistants: Do you need some support for when you are preparing to lead tutorial discussions or labs? Would you like to practice facilitation skills for these sessions? Join other multilingual graduate students in this workshop眩o疾xplore language for盎tarting conversations, giving instructions, navigating tricky situations, transitioning between眩opics,畝nd using strong questions to promote understanding疳n your tutorials and labs.玆ou will learn some strategies and practices that you can apply right away that will help in your development as a confident and competent TA!

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Describe and select a range of contextualized facilitation strategies
  • Produce context-specific language to support their teaching roles
  • Identify concrete ways to build your confidence as a TA
  • Explain the connection between TA clarity and student learning

  • Identify and select appropriate equitable approaches to marking assessments
  • Explain where to find procedural grading support

Multilingual and International TAs: Facilitating Tricky Situations in your Tutorial

Summary

This session offers multilingual teaching assistants a chance to practice strategies for facilitating tricky situations in class.

Description

Calling all multilingual Teaching Assistants: Do you want to feel more comfortable in handling tricky tutorial situations, such as when none of your students are participating, or when one person dominates discussion? Would you like to practice how to facilitate a session when the discussion gets heated, or when an inappropriate comment is made? Join other multilingual graduate students in this workshop to practice some common scenarios and become more comfortable in applying facilitation skills to a range of situations.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Increase your comfort level in addressing common What do I do when色 tutorial scenarios using appropriate language
  • Identify ways to motivate your students to participate when no one is
  • Serve as a role model for the conduct you expect from students
