Summary
Are you interested in learning more about the process of designing and facilitating an online course? In this three-part series, you will explore the theory and practice of online course design, the development of online assessments and learning activities, and the creation of online community and instructor presence.
Description
Addressing key considerations in the design or redesign of online courses, these sessions are intended to walk you through the process of planning, designing and facilitating your online course. Explore alternative assessment structures and options for creating engaging content as you get started on the design of a dynamic and manageable online course.

Online Course Design Workshop 1: Where am I? Situating Your Course for Online Delivery
What is this workshop about?
Effective online design requires careful planning and alignment of learning outcomes, assessments and instructional/learning activities. In this in-person interactive workshop, you will first explore how situational factors shape your decisions in creating your course. Built upon that, you will create a full course journey map guided by your learning outcomes.
What will I be able to do by the end of this workshop?
- Identify situational factors and learner-centred course design
- Draft your course goals and learning outcomes
- Create a course map based on the content explorations
Who should participate?
- All 丁香园AV instructors with tons of or no experience in online teaching
What to expect?
- Bringing a course outline or syllabus to the workshop
- Working in a welcoming and safe community
- Doing small group work and interacting with facilitators and colleagues

Online Course Design Workshop 2: Designing Alternative Online Assessments
In the second workshop in our online course design series, you will have an opportunity to explore the core principles of a student-centred assessment plan. We will examine alternate and authentic assessment options and showcase educational technologies which foster collaboration, critical thinking, and digital literacy.
Learning Outcomes
You will leave the workshop with strategies that enable students to demonstrate their learning in non-traditional ways, within the current context, including Gen AI.

Online Course Design Workshop 3: Engaging Students Online
Description
Student engagement can be challenging in all modalities of teaching. Online teaching offers unique opportunities to enhance the learning experience for all students, allowing for equal opportunities for their success. In this interactive virtual workshop, participants will explore the whys and hows of the transition from teaching face-to-face to designing and facilitating online. Through the intentional use of evidence-based teaching strategies, we will discuss ways to build meaningful and effective online engagement.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop you will be able to:
- Identify ways to develop relationships with students specifically in an online learning environment
- Discuss and establish online presence through the community of inquiry framework
- Introduce key concepts of UDL, accessibility and inclusion in designing learning experiences

These sessions are aimed at faculty, instructors and graduate students interested in the design and facilitation of online courses.

Sessions are 2 hours in length unless otherwise stated.
You may choose to attend one or more sessions. Completing other workshops in the series prior to attending is not a requirement.
