Do you want to learn more about blended learning at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV? Are you ready to dive in and revise your course into a blended format? This workshop series is for you! The three part Blended Learning Workshop series addresses theory and practice of blended course design, online learning activity development, and effective facilitation strategies in both modalities. 

Description 

With guidance from a facilitator and the help of colleagues, these sessions will help you make informed decisions about blended learning, such as identifying a suitable scheduling option and adopting a pedagogical approach that can enhance the student learning experience. You will also explore instructional models to assist with integrating online and in-person components, and discuss facilitating strategies that promote successful blended learning experiences.

What to expect 

Each of the sessions involves a mix of discussion, presentation, and hands-on work with a range of blended learning approaches and tools.

Blended Learning Workshop 1: Getting Started

Summary

Part 1 of the Blended Learning Workshop series provides an opportunity for instructors to map out their course in a blended format.

Description

Are you ready to get the blender out?! Getting Started with blended learning offers you an opportunity to map out a course in a blended format. With guidance from a facilitator and the help of colleagues, you will be able to make informed decisions about blended learning such as identifying the most suitable scheduling option and adopting a pedagogical approach that can enhance the student learning experience.

At the end of this 2-hour session, instructors will have a concept map and sense of direction to identify elements best suited for in-class instruction and for online learning. This workshop is the first of a three part series, but can be attended as a one-off session.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this workshop, you should be able to:

  • Apply the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV definition of blended learning, and scheduling options to your teaching context
  • Compare/contrast instructor and student fears, motivation, and interest related to blended teaching and learning
  • Adapt a pedagogical approach/model suitable for a blended learning format of a target course

Blended Learning Workshop 2: Designing and Integrating Online Components

Summary

Part 2 of the Blended Learning Workshop series explores ways to promote interaction and enhance the blended learning environment.

Description

All blends are not created equal. Designing and Integrating Online Components builds on the foundation from Getting Started by looking at ways to enhance the learning environment of a blended course in any discipline. Through collaboration with colleagues, you will explore methods of promoting interaction with a variety of learning activities. Using an instructional model, you will determine a consistent sequence of activities to follow in your blended course and plan for the development of the online component. A demonstration of learning technology tools will help you make informed decisions about what to implement in your blended course.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this workshop, you should be able to:

  • Identify a range of activity options that promote interaction and participation in your course
  • Design an effective activity sequence for your blended course
  • Plan out the development of well-integrated online learning activities that promote asynchronous interaction

Blended Learning Workshop 3: Facilitating Blended Learning

Summary

Part 3 of the Blended Learning Workshop series explores the changing role of the instructor in delivering a blended course.

Description

Got rhythm? Facilitating Blended Learning is all about how to dance between modes. This session explores the shift in role that instructors often experience when delivering a blended course. More than a workshop, it provides you a space to connect with others who are navigating the change that comes with teaching in multiple modes. With guidance and advice on how to enhance facilitating skills, you will have the opportunity to plan for a blended delivery to make teaching more rewarding and courses more engaging.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this workshop, you should be able to:

  • Identify points of overlap and departure between the roles of teaching face-to-face and facilitating online learning
  • Describe a variety of approaches to facilitating online learning
  • Plan for the integration of teaching face-to-face sessions and facilitating online learning

Typically offered in April.

Audience

Faculty, instructors and graduate students with all levels of teaching experience and all disciplinary backgrounds are welcome.

These sessions are aimed at instructors who are embarking on (re)design of a course into a blended format.

Dates and Times

You may choose to attend one or more sessions. Completing other workshops in the series prior to attending is not a requirement.
