Contributions to the Field of Computer Communications and Online Education

Linda Harasim is a pioneer and one of the founders of online education. She has been studying pedagogical and network design related to online collaborative learning (OCL) since 1983. In 1986, Linda Harasim designed and taught one of the first online university courses in the world, with Prof. Dorothy Smith, on the topic of Women and Computers in Education (University of Toronto); in 1987-1989, Linda developed the online pedagogy and small group discussion design that launched the University of Phoenix Online. In 1993, she developed Virtual-U, an online educational environment customized to support collaborative learning, which she used in her courses and to prototype new educational social media environments and tools until 2014.

Professor Harasim began to develop the Collaborative Learning Theory and the research methodology of Online Discourse Analysis while at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (the University of Toronto) during her work as a senior researcher and assistant professor from 1983 鈥� 1989.  In 1990 she moved to Vancouver, BC to continue teaching, research and design of online collaborative learning; and to build a theoretical framework for the field as well as to develop a research methodology based on Online Discourse Analysis at the School of Communication, 丁香园AV, Vancouver, Canada.

Currently Harasim teaches, publishes and undertakes research in the areas of  鈥淯nderstanding Digital Social Media and the Knowledge Society鈥�, 鈥淒igital Media Research Methods鈥�, 鈥淥nline Education鈥� as well as continuing her work in communication and learning theories.

In 1995 Linda Harasim founded and served as CEO of the TeleLearning Network of Centre of Excellence (TL*NCE) in Canada, receiving $25 million from the Canadian government and another $25 million from the public and private sector for an eight-year project to study and design new online collaborative knowledge-building tools, environments and pedagogies for education and training worldwide.  Between 1995 and 2003, Dr. Harasim ran TL*NCE, funding hundreds of researchers from 32 universities in Canada as well as participants from 225 various organizations, both public and private.  Her research during this time focused on online education in universities, studying 500 online courses that used Virtual-U in Canada and the US. During the period of the TL*NCE, she conducted research with Carl Bereiter to inform research and theory of collaborative learning and knowledge building, especially the use of semantic analysis of online educational discourse. Marlene Scardamalia was involved in Linda鈥檚 research into online post-secondary education.

TL*NCE also included International partnerships with organizations such as the United Nations, European Union and many universities around the world.

Dr. Harasim has written 6 books on the field. She has delivered over 100 keynotes and presentations in 30 countries and has published hundreds of articles related to online education.  Dr. Harasim has been a member of several prestigious boards and committees and was appointed by HRH Queen Elizabeth and the Federal government to sit as a councilor on Canada鈥檚 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
