Kari Grain is a practitioner-scholar at the intersection of higher education, social justice, and community engagement. Grain works at CERi as a Special Research Associate where she lends her expertise to numerous initiatives. She earned her PhD in Education at UBC as a Vanier scholar, where her research focused on local community impacts of international service-learning in Uganda.

Recently, Grain joined host Am Johal on the Below the Radar podcast to unpack ethics in community-engaged research and experiential learning. She discusses her dissertation on the impacts of international service learning on local community partners. Grain and Johal also explore barriers to meaningful and ethical community-engaged research at an institutional level, and talk about the importance of reciprocity and inviting community in through the doors of the university.

This fall, Grain developed a CER ethical principles resource which covers 10 integral ethical principles to consider when approaching this form of research. Each principle includes a set of practical questions that a community-engaged researcher might consider as part of their process. This resource was designed for community members, early career scholars, faculty, staff and organizations.
