At 間眅埶AV's School of Medicine (SoM), we envision a medical education system where students and residents learn as part of a team in primary care and other community-level settings, in patient-centred environments, and with a curriculum that considers social, environmental and prevention contexts. As we establish the school in Surrey, B.C., our growing relationships with the local community, Fraser Health Authority, First Nations Health Authority, physicians and Indigenous partners will help us to meet the diverse health needs of the communities we serve and improve access to primary care throughout the province. We seek to advance reconciliation by embedding and equalizing Indigenous knowledge systems in our learning, research and practices while resting on a solid foundation of high-quality, accredited education and world-class research efforts that keep us oriented towards measurable socially accountable outcomes.
About the Role
The School of Medicine at 間眅埶AV invites applications for an Assistant Dean, 間眅埶AVs. The Assistant Dean appointment will be for a 3-year term, renewable, with an underlying faculty position. The underlying faculty position will be made at the appropriate rank and category, commensurate with experience. To be eligible to hold the underlying faculty position, candidates are expected to be able to contribute to teaching, service, and scholarship related to medical education and/or medical research. Alternative appointment arrangements (such as half-time) may also be considered to facilitate other commitments candidates may have.
The salary for the successful applicant will depend on the rank, category of appointment, and experience of the candidate, however, a reasonable estimate of the salary range is $185,000 - $270,000 (inclusive of an administrative stipend for the Assistant Dean role and prorated depending on other commitments outside of academic work).
The Assistant Dean, 間眅埶AVs for the 間眅埶AV SoM supports the enrollment goals of building academically vibrant, increasingly talented, and diverse incoming classes by actively recruiting, admitting, and enrolling students. The Assistant Dean reports to the Associate Dean, Students, and liaises with and supporting all sectors of the educational continuum in 間眅埶AV SoM.
Key Areas of Involvement
The main objective for the Assistant Dean, 間眅埶AVs is to ensure adherence to all policies and processes relating to admissions through all streams of the MD Program.
Provide leadership in the development and implementation of the 間眅埶AV SoM goals in undergraduate medical education
In collaboration with the Assistant Dean in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education: support the advancement of the program
In close collaboration with the Associate Dean, Indigenous: co-develops the Indigenous 間眅埶AVs and pre-admissions stream
In collaboration with the Associate Dean, Assessment, Accreditation and Evaluation: monitor the processes and outcomes of MD program admissions; and ensure continued compliance of MD admissions with CACMS accreditation standards
In collaboration with the Associate Dean, Students and Assistant Dean, Learner Affairs: develop, interpret and/or implement policies related to MD 間眅埶AVs
Work closely with the Dean, Associate Deans and other Assistant Deans to develop SoM policy, planning and operations
Work closely with the Dean and administrative directors of the SoM to support the space, staffing and funding needs of MD 間眅埶AVs
Participates as a member of provincial and national committees involved in undergraduate medical admissions.
Assesses and adjudicates all requests for admission deferral, as per established Guideline for 間眅埶AVs Deferral.
Work with those responsible for admissions at other Canadian Universities to support innovation and to address problems of mutual interest and concern
Undertake duties as may from time to time be assigned to them by the Dean or Associate Dean, Students.
Serve as Acting Associate Dean Learners on notification from the ADL of short-term absences
Qualifications & Experience:
Required:
M.D. (Doctor of Medicine)
Excellent knowledge and understanding of and respect for Indigenous cultural identities and values
Excellent knowledge and understanding of and respect for Indigenous cultural identities and values
Minimum of 5 years of direct teaching experience of medical learners
Experience with medical education leadership
Preference may be given to candidates who possess some or all of the following:
Eligibility to hold a license to practice medicine in British Columbia
Holds CCFP/FCFP
Knowledge of accreditation standards and guidelines for undergraduate medical education
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups and teams
Familiarity with MD 間眅埶AVs, the medical education environment, and health care environments in primary care environments

The Assistant Dean, UGME for the 間眅埶AV SoM plays a crucial role in shaping and advancing the undergraduate medical education program, ensuring high standards of curriculum delivery, fostering a positive learning environment, and promoting excellence in medical education in the 間眅埶AV SoM.
Key Areas of Involvement
The Assistant Dean, UGME is responsible for overseeing the 間眅埶AV Doctor of Medicine (UGME) program including developing, delivering and monitoring of curriculum, and developing, interpreting and implementing policies pertaining to undergraduate medical education within the 間眅埶AV SoM. In fulfilling this mandate, the Assistant Dean, UGME works in close collaboration with the Associate Dean Accreditation, Assessment and Evaluation, the Assistant Dean, UGME and other members of the Senior Leadership Team of the School of Medicine. The specific areas of involvement include, but are not limited to:
Provide leadership in the development and implementation of the 間眅埶AV SoM goals in undergraduate medical education
In collaboration with the Associate Dean, Medical Education Programs: oversee curriculum development, delivery and monitoring; develop, interpret and/or implement policies related to the undergraduate program
In collaboration with the Associate Dean, Assessment, Accreditation and Evaluation and other members of the Senior Leadership Team: oversee the implementation and monitoring of the program of assessment; monitor the processes and outcomes of the undergraduate medical education program; ensure continued compliance with CACMS accreditation standards
In collaboration with the Associate Dean Indigenous Health and other members of the Senior Leadership Team: contribute to 間眅埶AV SoMs commitment to TRC Calls to Action #23 and 24; create opportunities to integrate Indigenous ways of knowing into MD Program structures such as curriculum, assessment, policies and processes
In collaboration with the Assistant Dean Learner Affairs, support students requiring additional learning resources
In collaboration with the Associate Dean Research, support and encourage research in medical education
Assist and advise faculty members (who are direct reports) in the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education regarding the performance of their duties and their career development
Work closely with other members of the senior leadership team to develop SoM policy, planning and operations
Work closely with other members of the senior leadership team to support the space, staffing and funding needs of the UGME program
Represent the SoM with regard to undergraduate studies by being a member of relevant bodies within 間眅埶AV
Work with deans for undergraduate education at other Canadian Universities to support innovation and to address problems of mutual interest and concern
Undertake duties as may from time to time be assigned to them by the Dean or Associate Dean, Medical Education Programs
Act as Associate Dean, Medical Education Program (AD MEP) on notification from the AD Medical Education Programs of short-term absences
Qualifications & Experience:
Required
M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) is required.
Minimum of 5 years of direct teaching experience with medical learners
Knowledge of and respect for Indigenous cultural identities and values
Experience with the development, management, and/or monitoring of medical education curriculum
Additional Assets
Preference will be given to family physicians and generalist specialists
Eligibility to hold a license to practice medicine in British Columbia is preferred
Masters Degree or PhD in a field related to health or education
Knowledge of accreditation standards and guidelines for undergraduate medical education
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups and teams
Familiarity with MD curriculum, the medical education environment, and health care environments (with a preference for primary care environments).

The salary for the successful applicant will depend on the rank, category of appointment, and experience of the candidate, however, a reasonable estimate of the salary range is $220,000 - $270,000 (inclusive of an administrative stipend for the Associate Dean role and prorated depending on other commitments outside of academic work).
The Associate Dean Indigenous Health for the 間眅埶AV School of Medicine (SM) provides critical leadership in conceptualizing and implementing the integration of Indigenous ways of knowing and being into all operational and academic aspects of the 間眅埶AV SM. The ADIH reports to the Dean, 間眅埶AV SM, and is a member of the senior executive team of the 間眅埶AV SM.
Key Areas of Involvement
The main objective for the ADIH is the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy for embedding respectful and relevant Indigenous content, perspectives and practices into the culture of the 間眅埶AV SM, and developing an approach to engaging and collaborating with First Nations, M矇tis and Inuit peoples in ways that uphold and align with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA). The strategy will inform and guide all aspects of the School of Medicine, including curriculum development, instructional approaches, faculty development, admissions, Indigenous (First Nations, M矇tis and Inuit) student recruitment and support, infrastructure design, human resources, etc.
The ADIH will build upon the foundations laid by the interim ADIH; one of the key deliverables will be the establishment of priorities and timelines for the role. Examples of key deliverables for the ADIH may include:
- Leading a collaborative process by which to establish a set of principles and values to guide the manner in which 間眅埶AV SM engages with First Nations, Metis and Inuit Peoples and/or honours and upholds Indigenous cultures, knowledges, processes and ways of working.
- Establishing the foundation of practices and policies needed to achieve the main objective(s).
- Developing and maintaining meaningful relationships and systems for consultation and cooperation with Indigenous Peoples (First Nations, M矇tis and Inuit), communities and organizations including the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA).
- Building and maintaining relationships and partnerships with host Nations in the Fraser Region.
- Convening the 間眅埶AV SM Indigenous Network/Caucus that connects Indigenous participants in 間眅埶AV SM committees and working groups to ensure a loud and strong Indigenous voice in the establishment and operation of the 間眅埶AV SM.
- Leading the recruitment of and support for the 間眅埶AV SM Elders and Knowledge Keepers Circle.
- In collaboration with the 間眅埶AV EDI lead, establishing protocols for ensuring that Indigenous and EDI principles, values and practices are viewed as separate, but interconnected, in the 間眅埶AV SM.
- Leading the development of systems and processes to embed cultural safety and humility into 間眅埶AV MS curriculum and operations. Establishing processes for collaboration with key 間眅埶AV functions (such as HR, Finance, Registrar/Student Services, Marketing/Communications, etc.) and with 間眅埶AV Indigenous leadership and 間眅埶AV SM partners to promote best practices for the 間眅埶AV SM.
- Planning for and implementing hiring members of the support team needed to help carry the work forward in a good way with a priority on hiring Indigenous people.
- Liaising with 間眅埶AV SM partners in the FNHA and the Fraser Health Authority to ensure collaboration on Indigenous initiatives and matters of the 間眅埶AV SM.
Other Responsibilities of the Role of ADIH
- Be a senior leader and face of the 間眅埶AV SM in discussions internally within 間眅埶AV and externally with partners and levels of government.
- Actively contribute to curriculum development for 間眅埶AV SM medical education programs, beginning with the MD program; ensuring that cultural safety and humility are embedded.
- Chair the 間眅埶AV SM Indigenous 間眅埶AVs subcommittee Actively contribute to the development of 間眅埶AV SM selection and admissions policies and procedures as a member of the 間眅埶AV SM 間眅埶AVs committee.
- Actively contribute to the development of 間眅埶AV SM Indigenous Learner Support policies and procedures and lead the recruitment of Indigenous learner support workers, including Elder(s).
- Lead the development of a BC Indigenous Health Leaders Forum that brings together Indigenous people involved in all aspects of health care in the province. Ensure representation of 間眅埶AV SM at provincial, national and international levels, including organizations and bodies such as the BC Indigenous Physicians Network, the UBC Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health, the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada (IPAC), the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC), the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and the Pacific Region Indigenous Doctors Congress (PRIDoC).
Qualifications & Experience:
- Eligibility to hold a license to practice medicine in British Columbia preferred
- M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) preferred
- Ph.D. in a field related to health care desired
- Health care education and/or post-secondary education preferred
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of and respect for Indigenous cultural identities and values is required
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

The ADR for 間眅埶AV SoM provides leadership in advancing the research mission and growing our reputation in medical and health research. The ADR fosters a culture of inquiry amongst learners, and of collaboration and excellence with researchers within and outside of the School of Medicine. The ADR reports to the Dean, 間眅埶AV SoM, and is a member of the senior executive team.
Key Areas of Involvement:
The key objective for the ADR is the development and implementation of the 間眅埶AV SoM research strategic plan that will build upon the pillars of the 間眅埶AV SoMs Vision. The establishment of effective research collaborations within the SoM, across 間眅埶AV, with key community partners, and with medical researchers around the world will be critical to the success of the strategic plan.
The portfolio for the 間眅埶AV SoM ADR shall include responsibility for:
- Leadership: develop and implement a strategic plan that aligns with both the vision and mission of the SoM as well as the broader mission of the university.
- Research supports: drawing on resources from across 間眅埶AV, develop and support the research infrastructure needed to foster research collaborations, prepare and administer research grants and contracts, ensure adherence to the highest standards of research ethics and integrity, and support knowledge mobilization activities.
- Research results: progressively increase o applications and success rates for externally-funded granting competitions and proposals for research contracts; and
- the scholarly dissemination/knowledge mobilization of the products of research.
- Develop and support the undergraduate (Doctor of Medicine) student group research projects program and develop mechanisms to support student participation in research outside of the mandatory group program.
- Involve researchers from across the 間眅埶AV community in co-creating and supporting SoM led and supported research initiatives.
- Liaise with community partners to identify research needs, and involve members of the community (including patient partners) in research projects.
Other Responsibilities of the Role of the ADR:
- Participate on the Deans Executive Committee.
- Undertake duties as may from time to time be assigned to them by the Dean.
- Work collegially and in partnership with faculty, other academic administrators, staff and the 間眅埶AV SoM community/stakeholders.
- Serve as Acting Dean on notification from the Dean of short-term absences
- Represent the SoM at external meetings and conferences related to research
- Serve on pan-university meetings of ADR and the activities undertaken by this group (e.g., internal grant review committees, award nominations and reviews, etc.).
Qualifications & Experience:
- Ph.D. required
- M.D. preferred. A Masters degree plus graduate degree with an active research portfolio may also be considered
- Active research agenda and a strong record of scholarly publications required
- Experience in research administration and securing competitive grants or contracts in support of research is preferred
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of and respect for Indigenous cultural identities and values are preferred
- Experience in and/or knowledge of Primary Care is preferred
- Eligibility to hold a license to practice medicine in British Columbia desired
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
