About the Faculty

FHS was created in 2005 with a mission to improve the health of individuals and populations and reduce health inequities through excellence in interdisciplinary research and education, in partnership with local, national, and global communities, and with a commitment to social justice. FHS is committed to improving our understanding of Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) as fundamental determinants of health.

The successful candidate will be supported by collegial, interdisciplinary faculty who employ various approaches to understanding complex biological and societal relationships contributing to health. The successful candidate will join a diverse and dynamic team of more than 50 multidisciplinary faculty members and will be able to engage with and teach undergraduate students in the BA/BSc programs and graduate students in MPH/MSc/PhD programs.

The Opportunity

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at 間眅埶AV (間眅埶AV) invites applications for a full-time continuing Lecturer position at the Burnaby campus to start as early as January 1, 2025. The Faculty seeks outstanding candidates with proven track records of teaching and developing courses, including foundations of health sciences and research methods.

Lecturers are an integral part of the FHS. They contribute to the academic mission of teaching, preparing Health Sciences students for various health-related careers and graduate studies, and contribute to pedagogical leadership. Lecturers fully participate in the administration of the faculty and have voting rights, such as tenure-track faculty, on all faculty and  university issues.  Analogous to tenure-track faculty, Lecturers can be promoted to Senior Lecturer and University Lecturer ranks, and they can apply for paid study leaves for career advancement and professional development. A typical Lecturer appointment is split into 80% teaching and 20% service.

Our priority is to find a candidate to teach:

  • HSCI 120 - Introduction to Human Sexuality and Sexual Behavior 
  • HSCI 130 Foundations of Health Science
  • HSCI 207 Research Methods in Health Sciences

Additionally, the ideal candidate would be able to teach one or more of the following 400-level courses:

  • HSCI 449 Community and Health Service
  • HSCI 481 Senior Seminar in Social Health Science
  • HSCI 483 Senior Seminar in Environmental Health
  • HSCI 484 Senior Seminar in Population Health Research 
  • HSCI 485 Senior Seminar in Mental Health and Addictions 
  • HSCI 486 Senior Seminar in Global Health
  • HSCI 495 Applied Health Science Project

The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include the following:

  • Teaching and updating assigned courses.
  • Developing new courses as directed.
  • Supervision of directed studies and honours students.
  • Supervision of and collaboration with teaching assistants.
  • Contribute actively to building a vibrant culture in the Faculty, with service contributions to areas such as: 
    • Curriculum development.
    • Discussions on teaching and learning.
    • Supporting instructors in academic integrity and student conduct.
    • Student recruitment and community outreach.
    • REDI. 
    • Student liaison.

An ideal candidate is expected to possess the following qualifications:

  • The successful candidate must have a PhD by the employment start date; however, PhD candidates with solid indication of imminent completion may be hired. The doctoral degree will provide:
    • A solid foundation in health sciences, understanding how health, illness, and disease are defined, measured, and influenced across populations.
    • Proficiency in research methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative. The candidate should have experience designing and conducting research, with expertise in mixed methods, research ethics, data collection, and analysis.
  • Academic or other professional experience in teaching and developing courses.
  • Demonstrated experience in evidence-based pedagogy.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and group management skills.
  • Evidence of teaching with a commitment to REDI

Faculty salaries at 間眅埶AV are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the 間眅埶AV Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range at the Lecturer rank is $98,340 - $114,241 (subject to experience).

The Opportunity

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at 間眅埶AV (間眅埶AV) and the BC Childrens Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) invite applications for a full-time Practitioner Faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of evaluation research/health economics with a specialization in child health. This is a Term Practitioner Faculty Appointment, for a five-year term. Renewal may be possible subject to the provisions of the 間眅埶AV Faculty Association/間眅埶AV Collective Agreement. The anticipated start date is Spring 2025 or later. The successful candidate will be employed by 間眅埶AV and seconded part-time (50%) to BCCHR as a Staff Scientist.

Faculty salaries at 間眅埶AV are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the 間眅埶AV Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is $104,700 to $133,322. PhD candidates with solid indication of imminent completion may be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor upon completion of the PhD. A reasonable estimate of the salary range if the successful candidate starts as an Instructor is $98,340 to $104,700. Note, these expected salary ranges do not include the value of benefits. A start-up package to support the successful candidates development of a research program will also be provided.

The Successful Applicant

FHS and BCCHR seek an individual of outstanding promise who will contribute to the diversity and excellence of scholars at the respective institutions. The successful applicant will provide evaluation and health economics research services to the BCCHR research community as a Staff Scientist and be encouraged to develop their own independent child health research program. The position will be considered an independent investigator for external grant/funding purposes and eligible to hold funds at 間眅埶AV. Knowledge mobilization to the scholarly community, professional groups, the public, and other stakeholders, as appropriate, is also expected. The teaching load is 2.5 courses per year, commensurate with the 50/50 appointment agreement between 間眅埶AV and BCCHR. All teaching commitments will be provided to FHS. Breadth in teaching experience and interests relevant to FHS will be considered favourably.

The candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree (or, as stated above, be a PhD candidate with solid indication of imminent completion) and have demonstrated excellence in research, potential for excellence in teaching and supervision, and commitment to collegial service. Skills and experience in health economic evaluation are essential. The candidate will show a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching and will be expected to contribute to teaching and mentorship in Immunology at all levels.
