Assistant Professor in Plant Biology

The Department of Biological Sciences within the Faculty of Science at 間眅埶AV invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Plant Biology. The expected start date is November 15, 2025 or March 15, 2026. We seek an outstanding scholar with a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service.

About Biological Sciences at 間眅埶AV

The Department of Biological Sciences (BISC) was established at 間眅埶AV in 1965, and remains a broad-based Biology Department with research interests ranging from cell and molecular biology, through organismal biology and physiology, to ecology, evolutionary biology and conservation. We currently comprise 30 research faculty and 9 teaching faculty, with ~650 Undergraduate majors and ~100 Graduate students. The Department has research groups in behavioural ecology (eBERG), applied biology (with a Masters of Environmental Toxicology), cell biology (Centre for Cell Biology, Development and Disease - C2D2), aquatic conservation (Earth2Ocean), avian ecology and conservation (the Centre for Wildlife Ecology - CWE), and evolutionary biology (Crawford Lab of Evolutionary Studies). Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain an active and externally funded research program; 
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, e.g. in Plant Biology, Plant Physiology, Plant-Microbe Interactions, Pest Management, Plant-insect interactions, Conservation, Biodiversity, Genomics;
  • Supervise and mentor graduate students;
  • Contribute to service activities within the department, faculty, and university;
  • Engage with the broader scientific and academic community;
  • Contribute to the Departments efforts in supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Qualifications

Excellence in research and teaching are the primary criteria for this position. The successful candidate should hold a PhD in any area of plant biology or a closely related field by the employment start date.

The successful candidate must:

  • Hold a PhD in any area of plant biology or a related discipline.
  • Have demonstrated excellence in research related to any aspect of plant biology. Criteria for assessment of excellence could include:
    • extensive experience conducting scientific studies in the specified research area,
    • high-quality scientific publications in leading peer-reviewed journals of the field,
    • awards and/or secured external funding (including scholarships),
    • dissemination of research contribution via conferences and seminars.
  • Articulate a compelling vision for a research program that addresses questions of fundamental importance to the field and has clear potential to attract top-quality trainees, extramural funding, new scientific collaborations, and uptake by knowledge users.
  • Show clear evidence of, or potential for, excellence as a mentor of graduate students and research trainees, especially those from equity-deserving groups.
  • Demonstrate deep and broad knowledge of fields related to plant biology to teach undergraduate and graduate courses effectively in these areas.Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written, in English) including, but not limited to, strong listening skills, valuing and respecting diverse perspectives, and a collaborative disposition.

TENURE-TRACK APPOINTMENT | THELMA FINLAYSON CHAIR IN BIOLOGICAL CONTROL

The Department of Biological Sciences (BISC) at 間眅埶AV invites applications, from Canadian and international researchers, for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor for the Thelma Finlayson Chair in Biological Control. This Chair is funded through a substantial endowment from the late Professor Thelma Finlayson (Order of Canada).

We invite applications from outstanding, early-career scientists from a broad range of disciplines related to biological control or pest management, including but not limited to applied insect biology, plant-insect interactions, invasion biology, and plant or insect genetics, biotechnology, or genomics, in any forest, agricultural, horticultural, urban or natural ecosystem. The position would begin no earlier than September 2025. The successful candidate should have demonstrated research excellence through a strong publication record in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals and be a current or future leader in their field. The new hire will be expected to contribute to development and teaching of new or existing courses related to biological control and pest management, as well as other core undergraduate and graduate courses in BISCs program. Core duties of an Assistant or Associate Professor in Biological Sciences

  • Research: Develop an externally funded research program including supervising and mentoring graduate students and highly qualified personnel in research training, and disseminating discoveries through peer- reviewed publications, conference presentations, and other forums appropriate to the discipline.
  • Teaching: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses including contributions to core, large-enrollment lower-division courses, and curriculum and program development.
  • Service: Perform service to the Department and the University, such as serving on committees and participating in departmental initiatives.

Qualifications for Assistant Professor

Excellence in research and teaching are the primary criteria for this position. The successful candidate must hold a PhD in any area of biology related to pest management or biological control by the employment start date.

Qualifications for Associate Professor

Excellence in research and teaching are the primary criteria for this position. The successful candidate must hold a PhD in any area of biology related to pest management or biological control. Only those holding or expected to hold the rank prior to the employment start date will be considered.

The candidate must demonstrate:

  • a strong record of research productivity commensurate with their experience;
  • evidence of establishment of a successful, externally-funded research program;
  • evidence of success in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level;
  • evidence of supervision of graduate students;
  • demonstrated contribution to the academic community and potential contribution to the Department, Faculty and Universitys academic community.

The typical workload distribution for tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professors at 間眅埶AV is 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service. Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology

Lecturer in Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiolgoy

The Opportunity

The Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology (BPK) invites applications for a full- time Lecturer in Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology to commence on May 1, 2025 or a mutually agreed-upon date.

Core duties of the Lecturer in Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology:

  • Teaching: Teach undergraduate laboratory and/or lecture-based courses in areas that may include: assessment of movement and motor function; assessment of the health and skill- related components of physical fitness; design and delivery of exercise programs for healthy adults and special or clinical populations to promote health, physical literacy, rehabilitation, or motor performance; introduction to kinesiology and health. Contribute to curriculum and program development.
  • Service: Serve the Department, the University, and the larger community by contributing to committee work and to departmental initiatives. The candidates service work will also involve liaising with professionals in the kinesiology community and potential employers of our Departments students and graduates, as well as with relevant accrediting, certifying and professional organizations.

The typical workload distribution for Lecturers in BPK is 80% teaching, and 20% service. About the Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology (BPK)

The mission of BPK is to advance the understanding of physiology, movement, neuroscience, and human health through fundamental and applied research, education, and service. BPK offers undergraduate (BSc, BSc Honours) and graduate degrees (MSc, PhD) in kinesiology, biomedical physiology, and behavioural neuroscience. Assistant or Associate Professor in Cardiac Arrhythmias

The Opportunity

The Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology (BPK) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Cardiac Arrhythmias to commence January 1, 2025, or a mutually agreed-upon date.

Desired Research Area

The ideal candidate will lead a research program using stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) to investigate inherited arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies at the Cellular and Regenerative Medicine Centre (CRMC). Areas may include studies on genetic variants associated with arrhythmias (e.g., ion channelopathies, sarcomeric proteins) or other cardiac diseases. Through their research, the ideal candidate will make use of available state-of-the-art infrastructure designed for optimal development and phenotyping of hiPSC-CMs to study this cardiac dysfunction. The candidate will have a collaborative disposition and sufficiently broad interests and expertise to readily engage in collaborations with other researchers in BPK, at 間眅埶AV and UBC, and with the broader cardiac arrhythmia community.

Core Duties of the Position in Cardiac Arrhythmias:

  • Research: Develop an externally funded research program devoted to advancing the field of channelopathy/cardiomyopathy research using hiPSC-CMs, supervise and mentor graduate students and other highly qualified personnel, and disseminate discoveries through peer- reviewed publications, conference presentations, and other forums appropriate to the discipline.
  • Teaching: Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of molecular cardiac physiology and contribute to curriculum and program development.

The Successful Candidate

Assistant Professor in Bioorganic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at 間眅埶AV invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Bioorganic Chemistry. We are seeking an outstanding scholar with a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service. The expected start date for this position is July 15, 2025. 

This position aims to recruit a top emerging talent in the general area of bioorganic chemistry with an emphasis on organic synthesis and/or chemical biology. Areas of particular interest include the design and testing of biologically relevant organic molecules, and applications of high-throughput assays to discover new bioactives. The position will build on 間眅埶AVs international recognition in this area, world-class facilities for drug discovery, and growing capabilities in automated synthesis. Applications that leverage 間眅埶AVs Center for High-Throughput Chemical Biology (HTCB, /htcb.html) are a particular focus of this search. The HTCB is a world-leading facility for robotic liquid handling and high-throughput screening, with a particular emphasis on image-based screening. The center enables biological evaluation of large libraries of compounds (e.g. those designed and generated through automated synthesis, computer-based design, and machine learning) and supports users by providing full-time professional staff and a suite of established biological assays.

Chemistry at 間眅埶AV

The Department of Chemistry () comprises 27 research faculty, with research interests spanning: organic chemistry and chemical biology; inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry; material science; and nuclear science. Current departmental strengths of relevance to this position include medicinal chemistry, natural products chemistry, and chemical biology. The Department has a vibrant graduate program and is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Furthermore, 間眅埶AVs core facilities such as the HTCB, Cedar (one of Canadas most powerful academic supercomputers), and the Big Data Hub provide opportunities for interdisciplinary research and foster interactions with research partners across the University, government, and local industries. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role at the Assistant Professor rank is $104,700 - $142,863, depending on experience. The estimated base salary range for Associate Professor is $130,142 - $168,305, and for Professor is $149,225 - $196,292, depending on experience.

Assistant Professor in Experimental Biophysics

The Department of Physics within the Faculty of Science at 間眅埶AV (間眅埶AV) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Experimental Biophysics. We seek an outstanding scholar with a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service.

間眅埶AV Biophysics is one of the leading Biophysics subgroups in Canada, a vibrant and collaborative community integrating experiment and theory. It is a core pillar of the supportive and collegial 間眅埶AV Physics Department and has strong ties to neighbouring departments, especially Chemistry and Molecular Biology & Biochemistry. 

The successful candidate is expected to develop a successful research program that is internationally recognized, teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute to building equitable, diverse and inclusive environments. Qualifications

At a minimum, the successful candidate must hold a PhD in Physics or a field closely related to Biophysics and must demonstrate:

  • Future research plans with scientific potential that complement and strengthen Biophysics at 間眅埶AV.
  • Interest and ability to realize excellence in teaching (across a range of Physics courses) and supervision of students.
