Assistant Professor in Indigenous Publishing 

The Publishing Program at 間眅埶AV invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Indigenous Publishing with a preferred starting date of July 15, 2025. Pursuant to Section 42 of the B.C. Human Rights Code, preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous, including but not limited to First Nations, Metis, and Inuit candidates from Canada, Native American candidates from the United States, and Indigenous candidates from Mexico, Central and South America, the Pacific Islands and Oceania. Such candidates who wish to qualify for preferential consideration are requested to self-identify in their application.

We encourage applications from candidates with expertise in any of the following areas:

  • Indigenous editing and style
  • Indigenous publishing protocols and community consultation
  • Indigenous design and production
  • Indigenous new media publishing and data fluencies
  • Community storytelling and education
  • The history of Indigenous publishing and/or literature in Canada

The successful candidate must have a PhD, Master of Publishing, other terminal degree in a relevant field, or equivalent industry experience. The ideal candidate will also have:

  • lived Indigenous experience;
  • a record of university or college teaching and course development, or demonstrated potential within the university or community contexts;
  • a record of undergraduate or graduate student mentorship, or other forms of mentorship including mentorship within a community context;
  • and an established record of research, publications, funding, and/or publishing practice.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level that contribute to the ongoing Indigenization of the curriculum (the teaching load for this position is 4 courses per year);
  • Develop and maintain an active publishing practice or research program, including the application for funding to support collaborative research and graduate student assistants, and the mobilization of that practice or research as appropriate;
  • Join colleagues in service to the school, faculty, and university governance, culture, and community building.

The successful candidate will have the option of joining the burgeoning interdisciplinary community of scholars of Indigenous literatures and media at 間眅埶AV, a university with a long history of engaging with Indigenous communities and Indigenous issues. Prompted in part by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007) and by the Final Report and Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (2015), 間眅埶AV formed the Aboriginal Reconciliation Council (ARC). Subsequently, the ARC report, Walk This Path with Us (2017), has guided changes including the appointment of a Director of Indigenous Initiatives and Reconciliation, increased hiring of Indigenous faculty, and the construction of The First Peoples Gathering House, which is scheduled to be open by the beginning of the appointment.

This tenure-track position is intended for applicants with an exceptional research record at the Assistant or Associate Professor level (or those who possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to these levels). About the School for the Contemporary Arts

The School for the Contemporary Arts (SCA) at 間眅埶AV is situated in one of downtown Vancouvers most dynamic and diverse neighbourhoods. Our school offers a unique curriculum in which studio classes in dance, film, music/sound, theatre/performance, production/design, and visual art are integrated with the historical and theoretical study of the arts. The Opportunity

Occupying the ancestral territories of the Musqueam (xwm庛kwym), Squamish (Sk戔wx戔w繳7mesh xwumixw), and Tsleil-Waututh (slil wta优), the SCA is guided by 間眅埶AVs framework for reconciliation, and aspires to create spaces and resources for decolonization through arts-based practice and research. Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant is expected to contribute meaningfully to the SCAs research strengths and to help sustain the collegial atmosphere within the School. The research program will support 間眅埶AVs  Strategic Research Plan, the goals of which include: advancing community-centred climate innovation; supporting health and wellness of individuals, populations and communities; expanding the foundations of knowledge and understanding our origins; strengthening democracy, justice, equity and education; and transforming industry and economies through technology, management, and policy. The Chairholder will be expected to maintain an outstanding program of research and a strong record of grants funding. Knowledge mobilization to the scholarly community, professional groups, the general public, and other stakeholders, as appropriate, is expected. Demonstrated experience in increasing diversity in the candidates current institutional environment, and in curriculum, is also an asset.

Experience mentoring equity-seeking students is expected, and experience mentoring equity-seeking faculty is an asset. Although 50 % teaching relief relative to regular faculty members will be provided to the Chairholder, the successful candidate will be expected to make significant contributions to the teaching mission of the SCA, including supervising and helping to secure financial support for graduate students.

Appointment to a continuing faculty position in the SCA requires an MFA or PhD completed by the time of appointment in a field or discipline of demonstrated relevance.

This position is contingent upon the applicant receiving a Tier 2 CRC prior to being appointed to a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at 間眅埶AV. The successful candidate will work with the Dean and support staff in the Faculty of Communication, Arts and Technology to prepare a nomination package for a Canada Research Chair. After review and approval by 間眅埶AVs Office of the Vice President, Research and International, the nomination will be submitted to the CRC program, ideally in October 2024. The nomination package will then be evaluated by the CRC programs external reviewers. Should the applicant be successful at this step, we estimate the earliest start date possible to be April 2025.

The position is subject to the availability of funding and to final approval by the University Board of Governors and the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat (TIPS). The Canada Research Chair is tenable for five years and may be renewed once, subject to the Chairholder demonstrating that they have achieved their objectives from their first term. Assistant Professor in Theatre & Performance

The School for the Contemporary Arts at 間眅埶AV invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Theatre & Performance, at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting July 15, 2025.

In 2023, the School for the Contemporary Arts (SCA) launched its newly redesigned Theatre & Performance program with a stronger, experimental focus on contemporary practices in live art and performance. We seek an interdisciplinary working artist with demonstrated expertise in the broad fields of theatre and performance. Applicants must have significant creative output and experience teaching in one or more of the following areas:

  • contemporary performance and live art
  • experimental and devised theatre
  • performance based social practice
  • site responsive practice
  • movement and body-based practice
  • text for performance

The successful candidate must be able to design and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. These curricula should provide practical, artistic and theoretical contexts for the schools expansive vision of contemporary and interdisciplinary performance. We encourage applications from individuals working in unique, emerging and underrepresented areas within the broad field of contemporary performance.

SCA Theatre & Performance

At the School for the Contemporary Arts, (SCA) we study performance as a worldmaking art practice; as a frame for encountering the past, present, and future; and as open questions we ask through rigorous studio experimentation: What can performance do? Why make performance now? What new forms can performance take within a contemporary context? What is the future of live performance? At SCA, we empower students to collaborate across disciplines, become versatile artists, and expand the field of live performance. In the Performance BFA track, students explore a broad range of genres and forms, including devised theatre, live art, site-specific/responsive work and social practice. Our program deviates from traditional theatre training by experimenting with contemporary processes of performance, unconventional narrative styles, expanded dramaturgy, experimental forms, new media and creative research. We examine how the fundamentals of performancetime, space, body, text, movementhelp us stage our burning political questions, enact necessary social interventions, and advance the broad aesthetic fields of contemporary art.

We seek a colleague to expand the pedagogic aim and scope of our program by supporting performance practices and research beyond traditional theatre training. Our emergent studio and hybrid studio-seminar courses serve five core-curricular groupings in the newly conceived Performance program: Live Acts (a wide range of studio courses on live forms and genres); Body (studio courses on embodiment and movement); Social (exploring collaboration and participation; integrating social practice and activist artmaking); Environment (from site specificity to staged ecologies); Context and Creative Research (courses that train students in experimental methods of artistic research, from local and international contexts; from expanded dramaturgy to practice based research).

Candidate Qualifications

  • MA, MFA, or PhD in a field or discipline of relevance.
  • A vibrant and continuing performance practice with significant creative output in one or more of the following areas: live art, devised/post dramatic theatre, social practice, digital/multimedia, immersive/site specific, expansive choreographic practice and/or time-based practices.
  • An ability to combine creative practice with critical inquiry in teaching and researching contemporary performance.
  • Experience combining a wide range of methodologies and artistic disciplines beyond traditional theatre; commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • A capacity to share, clearly and effectively, the theoretical, practical, and technical methodologies and historical/social contexts of their creative research with undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Experience working effectively, flexibly, collaboratively, and ethically with diverse communities of artists, educators and students across the university and local groups.
  • Established interest and capability in self-sufficient, hands-on making, and the ability to guide and unify full-scale public-facing works with modest resources.

Position Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a workload comprised of teaching, research and service to the area and school.

Teaching: Teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students within and across programs at the SCA. The development of public facing, student-involved projects in rotation with other full-time faculty is included as part of their teaching load. The normal teaching load for a faculty member is four courses (or their equivalent) annually. In each academic year, the normal trimester workload for research faculty is two semesters of teaching, two courses each semester and one semester dedicated to research in which no teaching duties are assigned.

Research: Research responsibilities require faculty to maintain a program of active artistic practice at local, national, and international levels outside of the university. Research at the School for the Contemporary Arts within 間眅埶AV is defined as the generation of knowledge and innovation through artistic expression, experimentation, and/or scholarship.

Service: The SCA is committed to an open, collegial, and inclusive style of governance. The position will contribute to this shared governance and advancement of the SCA mission through service and committee participation including student recruitment activities. Under the 間眅埶AVFA/間眅埶AV Collective Agreement, service also refers to the annual contributions that faculty make to university governance, to their profession, to the development of their discipline nationally, internationally or locally, and to the furthering of good relations between the university and the local community.

The School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT), located in beautiful greater Vancouver, seeks applications for a Teaching Faculty member in the position of Lecturer in Interactive Arts & Technology. SIAT is a vibrant, collaborative, interdisciplinary, and internationally recognized school integrating human-centered computing, design, and media.
