Students create poetry videos in partnership with City Poems Poetry project
Throughout the Spring 2023 semester, students from the IAT 344 Moving Images course created video poems for the Vancouver Poet Laureates .
The project aims to stimulate public engagement and interest in poetry about local historical, cultural, and ecological site.
Student teams were challenged with making short poetry videos based on 15 poems from an . All 15 poems centre around local sites like English Bay, Commercial Drive, the Komagata Maru memorial in Coal Harbour, Hogans Alley, Chinatown, and more.
In total, teams of IAT 344 students produced 17 poetry videos now available for viewing online on the Vancouver Public Library YouTube channel as a part of the City Poems Contest. The contest also includes poetry videos submissions from UBC and Emily Carr students.
The top three poetry videos, as selected by contest Judge , will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Museum of Vancouver on June 11, 2023 from 1:00-3:00PM.
Audience choice awards will also be announced at the ceremony and will be awarded based on the number of likes that the videos receive on the Vancouver Public Librarys YouTube playlist.
The voting period is open now until Thursday, May 25. See the full list of SIAT poetry videos below and "like" the YouTube videos to vote for your favourite videos!
