The ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Laser Safety Program ensures the safe and effective control of laser hazards and applies to all departments, faculty, staff, students, volunteers and visitors working with laser generating equipment, Class 3B and Class 4 lasers, and laser systems. The program is administered by the University Radiation Safety Committee (URSC) and the Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
Procedures
Risk Assessment
Conduct a risk assessment before purchasing and using laser equipment to ensure all required control measures are in place. The risk assessment is designed to lead the principal investigator with the objective of predetermining the necessary control measures prior to the purchase of laser equipment and prior to the start of work.
Laser acquisition
Always use reputable scientific suppliers to purchase lasers for research. Avoid purchasing research lasers from third-party consumer sites to ensure compliance with Canadian standards and upcoming Health Canada reforms. Please take a moment to review the EHS Hazard Alert - Mislabelled Third-Party Purchased Lasers.
Laser registration
The laser safety officer (LSO) and the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV University Radiation Safety Committee (URSC) are required to maintain a laser inventory for all class 3b and class 4 lasers at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV in accordance with ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV’s . Principal Investigators (or their designates) are responsible for registering their class 3B and class 4 lasers with the laser safety officer (LSO) via the online ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Laboratory hazard inventory system here: .
A record of all class 3B and class 4 laser and laser systems is required:
- to identify areas where class 3B and class 4 lasers are present so that appropriate administrative and engineering controls may be put in place; and
- to enable the laser and laser systems to be inspected on a regular basis for compliance with ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's Laser Safety Program.
Laser laboratory setup
Notify EHS of any Class 3B and Class 4 laser purchases and ensure the location and laboratory design are reviewed by the Laser Safety Officer (LSO). The Laser Safety Officer will commission the laser controlled area to ensure laser safety control measures are in place including: engineering controls, SOPs, hands-on job/task-specific training in addition to EHS training and PPE.
