Is a Bachelor of Environment in REM right for you?
If you are interested in being a changemaker and actively contributing to a more sustainable, equitable and just future, a REM degree is for you.
A Bachelor of Environment in Resource and Environmental Management (REM) is an interdisciplinary degree that combines perspectives from both the natural and social sciences to help you better understand today鈥檚 environmental challenges and enable you to contribute to meaningful solutions for a better future. In addition to gaining an understanding of how the natural environment works, you will explore the societal structures and processes that influence how we interact with the environment and the policy approaches and tools we have to promote change.
Examples of questions we discuss in REM are:
- Is the carbon tax an effective way to decarbonize our economy?
- Will we have enough electricity if we all drive electric vehicles?
- How can we balance conservation and preservation with the needs of local communities for jobs and economic development opportunities?
- How can we make communities more resilient to the impacts of climate change?
- How can we help industries like forestry, agriculture and fisheries become more sustainable?
You will learn about socio-cultural and Indigenous perspectives, earth processes, environmental impact assessments, analytics in decision-making, conflict resolution and policy, and planning and regulation 鈥� and how this knowledge can be used to guide sustainable environmental management. You will also look at specific natural resource industries like energy, forestry, or fisheries.

Making connections between government and industry and understanding the intersections between economics, climate justice, policy and ecology has helped her prepare for a variety of career opportunities.

Meet one of our alumni
Q虛谩n虛铆stis岣穉 (Michael) graduated in 2018 with a bachelor of environment. In 2021, he was recognized as one of Corporate Knights鈥檚 Top 30 Under 30 Sustainability Leaders and Future of Good鈥檚 Young Impact Leaders. During his undergraduate degree, his interests in conservation and Indigenous-led resource management led him to multiple co-op positions, which helped shape his professional career.
He is currently the Hailcistut (Reconciliation) Implementation Manager for the Heiltsuk Nation, where he is responsible for projects related to coastal and marine environments, economic development, housing and self governmence.

Planning Stream
The School of Resource and Environmental Management offers an accredited Planning Stream that students may apply to in their second year. Students in the Planning Stream work towards their Registered Professional Planner (RPP) designation, preparing them for a career in transportation planning, rural and urban planning, environmental planning and more.
Honours Program
The REM Honours program is extended to students who are excelling academically and who complete supplementary coursework with distinction. Students may apply to enter the REM honours program in their second year if they meet the following conditions:
A minimum of 45 units completed
A minimum CGPA of 3.33
Completion of REM 200 with a minimum grade of B+
Departmental approval
Co-op Program
Co-op is an exceptional way to acquire career-related experience and help finance your education. Students alternate academic semesters with a minimum of three full-time paid work terms. Students are encouraged to apply to Co-op as early as possible in their academic career to facilitate optimal scheduling.
