Materials Reuse
Facilities Services picks up, sorts, organizes, repairs, and stores reusable furnishings. Typical items include filing cabinets, office chairs, desks, bookshelves. Furnishings that cannot be reused is taken apart and sorted into bins for recycling. The used furnishings are available to University departments for reuse on campus at no cost except for moving charges. Selection varies and dependent on projects surplus, time of year, etc. Once you have viewed an item it will be tagged, and a can be made to have the item brought to your location on campus. Residual furnishings are periodically sent for auction to BC Government Asset Management Disposal.
Central Stores is open for viewings of current surplus items between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays (excluding holidays).
Classroom Used Furniture Recycling
Classroom furniture has to meet exacting functional criteria such as flexibility, aesthetics, compatibility with existing, strength and durability. It is also important to consider how this furniture will be disposed of at the end of life.
Facilities Services has worked for many years with , a Canadian furniture manufacturer in part because of their leadership in product stewardship and corporate commitment to sustainability. Since many classrooms on Burnaby campus are now old and undergoing renovations, it is expected that a significant amount of waste will be diverted through Calstone's Remanufacturing Program.
