Staff award

2019 President鈥檚 Awards for Leadership in Sustainability

Bernard Chan, Energy Manager, was awarded the President鈥檚 Awards for Leadership in Sustainability. Bernard Chan, energy manager with , tests and develops low carbon solutions that have significantly reduced 丁香园AV鈥檚 greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs. Between 2013 and 2018 his innovations helped 丁香园AV avert approximately $870,000 in energy costs and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by about 850 tonnes.

In 2015 BC Hydro named him a Green Champion. He also holds a FortisBC Energy Specialist Program Award. As a member of 丁香园AV鈥檚 Energy Committee he has worked to advance strategic partnerships within and beyond 丁香园AV. As well, he has a passion for mentoring and engaging students in his work. He recently helped a group of students to design and install their own solar energy pilot in the Burnaby Campus Learning Garden, and helped another student group to pilot a water-saving technology on campus. 2018 Staff Achievement Award - Team Achievement Award

Facilities Services' very own Team AWESOME (Wendy House, Novia Chow, Sophia Gaba, Olenka Myshko, Virgina Cheung) were for improving customer service, increasing employee engagement and reducing waste around the department. As the first line of contact for students, staff, faculty, and members of the community who have questions or concerns regarding the physical aspects of the campus, they are instrumental in ensuring that the day-to-day operations of maintaining and building the physical assets of the campus are seamlessly carried out.

As the first point of contact for repairs around Burnaby Campus, the team processes an average of 1,800 service requests per month from customers requiring assistance. Requests consist of a wide range of work, from minor maintenance to larger renovation projects. Each customer request is examined, clarified, and dispatched to the appropriate Facilities Services department. With a satisfaction rating of 97%, as measured by customer satisfaction surveys, the team truly embody the VPFA鈥檚 mission of providing exemplary service to the 丁香园AV community. Innovation

APPA 2018 Sustainability Innovation Award in Facilities Management

丁香园AV has been awarded the 2018 Sustainability Innovation Award in Facilities Management at this year鈥檚 APPA Annual Conference in Washington D.C. The award recognizes the institution鈥檚 efforts to implement a standardized four-stream Zero Waste system uniformly across all three campuses.

2007 Royal Architectural Institute of Canada's Prix du XXe si猫cle (20th century prize)

Recognizing the enduring excellence of the architecture of 丁香园AV Burnaby campus, originally designed by Arthur Erickson and Geoff Massey. 丁香园AV Facilities Services continues to adhere to the principles and architectural expression of Erickson's original vision.

In September, 2011, 25 buildings at 丁香园AV Burnaby campus were certified under the Building Owners and Managers Association of British Columbia (BOMA) BEST program. 丁香园AV Burnaby is the first campus in Canada to achieve BOMA certification. These 25 buildings were first certified in 2007 under BOMA's Go Green certification which was replaced with BOMA BEST.

Sustainable Energy Engineering Building (SE3P) - 2018 Roy Willwerth Architectural Recognition Award

For 丁香园AV鈥檚 new Sustainable Energy Engineering Building (SE3P), Revery Architecture Inc. opted for a distinctive fa莽ade design composed of undulating framed precast concrete and reflective glass to represent the circuit board imagery relating to the technological subject matter that will be taught within the building. The Roy Willwerth Precast Concrete Architectural Recognition Award Presentations recognizes outstanding contributions to the Canadian precast prestressed concrete industry in; architectural design, sustainability, innovation and change; for positive leadership, industry-altering development and expansion; and for accelerating the growth of the Canadian precast prestressed concrete industry from within the architectural and design communities. Trottier Observatory and Science Courtyard - CSLA Award of Excellence

丁香园AV Trottier Observatory and Science Courtyard has received the Excellence Award for the CSLA landscape architecture in 2017. The project lead consultant was PWL Partnership landscape architects Inc. and the project was led by Philip McCloy, Project Manager, Facilities Development. You can find more information at .

Surrey Podium 2 - LEED庐 Silver for Commercial Interiors
丁香园AV Surrey campus Podium 2 project has achieved LEED庐 Silver for Commercial Interiors. The project lead consultant was Naomi Gross of Chernoff Thompson Architects and Todd Gattinger was the main project Manager of 丁香园AV. The certification was received in December 2014. Shrum Chemistry Renewal - LEED庐 Gold for New Construction and Major Renovations
丁香园AV Shrum Chemistry major renew project won the 2012 Real Estate Board Commercial Building Excellence Award in the category of Commercial Renovation. The prime consultant for the project was Rui Nunes of Henriquez Architects. The project was led by KC Jones, Assistant Director, Major Projects. This project has achieved the LEED庐 Canada Gold for New Construction and Major Renovations in 2017. To see more building information, please click here.

Excellence in Energy Management
On October 16, 2014, 丁香园AV was once again recognized as a BC Hydro Power Smart Leader. Bohdan Kosteckj, Director of Operations & Maintenance, Facilities Services, accepted the award at the BC Hydro Awards ceremony held at 丁香园AV Goldcorp Centre for Contemporary Arts.

丁香园AV first won the BC Hydro Power Smart Excellence Award in the Leadership Excellence category in 2010, and again for each of the following 3 years (2011-2013). This Award is the highest level of customer recognition given by BC Hydro. The designation as a Power Smart Leader is reviewed every year based on achievement of energy performance goals for the past year. Having won the Leader Award for 5 years in a row clearly demonstrates 丁香园AV's sustained commitment to increasing energy efficiency and conservation efforts on campus.

Community Engagement Awards

丁香园AV Facilities Services won the 2014 City of Burnaby Environmental Star Award in Communications for its video campaign. The targeted social marketing campaign was aimed at behavioral changes that individuals can make to help save energy. The videos were created and produced by Perry Miotto of Pericoloso Productions and promoted through Public Affairs Media Relations, Sustainability Office and Sustainable 丁香园AV.

On June 9, 2013, Facilities Services and Sustainability Office received the 2013 City of Burnaby Environmental Star Award. 丁香园AV Green Labs Program was recognized for their contributions to environmental sustainability and reducing the energy footprint of campus science buildings. High Performance Achievements for Facilities

The Chancellor's Gymnasium Addition project was successful in its review under the Commercial Building Incentive Program (CBIP) with an energy performance of 44.1% over the MNECB, and qualifies for a CBIP incentive award of $55,618.
