MPub Magazine Projects Hit the Rack

 On March 6, 2015, the Master of Publishing candidates presented their final magazine projects to faculty and industry guests. This year's batch of magazines included a digital-first news magazine for young urbanites, a wedding magazine for men and an bsurdist cultural satire magazine.

Contra, a digital-first Canadian news magazine for young urbanites, explores current affairs through gripping first-person narratives. Online, the magazine focuses on highly shareable video and podcasts; while Contra's quarterly print edition delivers fresh long-form articles along with in-depth versions of its most powerful and personal stories from the website. An in-house native advertising agency, Canvas, assists advertisers and sponsors in connecting with Contra's desirable demographic.

The publishing team behind Union identified a gap in the wedding industry that they aimed to fill with their multi-platform media enterprise: men who find themselves overwhelmed, intimidated, disinterested or underqualified to take part in wedding planning. Union gives guys the tools they need—via their magazine, website, newsletter and app—to help create a fun, memorable and stress-free wedding experience, ultimately challenging gender roles and stereotypes along the way.

Absurdist cultural satire is the stomping ground for EGO Mag, a contemporary cross between Mad Magazine, Adbusters and The Onion. A web-focused brand, EGO offers daily comix, fiction, rants and Photoshop humour, collecting its best in an annual print issue distributed through a network of comedy clubs and indie shops that share the brand's love of humour, eccentricity, and boldness.
