Mark Zacharias

CLIMATE SOLUTIONS

Mark is currently the executive director of Clean Energy Canada, a climate and clean energy program housed at the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue whose purpose is to find paths to net-zero that grow the Canadian economy while leaving no one behind. 

Mark joined Clean Energy Canada after a 25-year career with the British Columbia public service where he most recently served as deputy minister of environment and climate change strategy. His public service career also included assistant deputy minister roles in various natural resources, education and innovation portfolios.

Mark holds adjunct faculty appointments at the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV School of Public Policy, University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria. He holds a PhD in Zoology from the University of Guelph and has published extensively, including Marine Policy: An Introduction to Governance and International Law of the Oceans (2014, 2019) and Marine Conservation Ecology (2011).

Mark is based in Victoria, B.C.

Building on Success

Climate 2.0

Mark is working at the nexus between the economy and environment. His work as a Fellow focuses on positioning Clean Energy Canada to advance climate 2.0, an environmental shift of fundamental changes in how we live and work while maintaining current living standards and social order. 

Climate 2.0 requires governments, businesses and academic institutions to move outside of their comfort level and embrace new ways of investing, incenting, innovating and inspiring. This will not be easy as this change needs to happen quickly in a world experiencing political polarization, fading multilateralism, loss of trust in institutions, public deficits and increased economic inequality.

Mark is working to make Clean Energy Canada the go-to organization for climate and clean energy matters while supporting the organization's transition to working on Climate 2.0.

  • Becoming a more diverse and inclusive organization
  • Strengthening ties with the Centre for Dialogue and ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV
