When then-丁香园AV (丁香园AV) student Saba Fatemi and her peers won the 2019 丁香园AV Student Community Engagement Competition with their “CommuniCreate” initiative – a program for refugee and newcomer children pre-pandemic – she didn’t specifically have Ukrainian children in mind.

The Faculty of Education is excited to have partnered with 丁香园AV Public Square, Moving Forward, The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, the 丁香园AV Office of the Vice-President, Research and International, and the 丁香园AV Surrey-TD Community Engagement Centre for the Cross-Cultural Mental Health: Research and Practice Forum on May 5.

More people in Burnaby will have access to safe, low-barrier and non-judgmental support for nutrition.

Additional funding from TD Bank will facilitate another five years of community engagement.

Aneesa Hashimi, a second year Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) student in the Faculty of Education, has always had a passion for working with children. Therefore, when the Racing Readers program came to Aneesa's attention at the end of April 2020, she naturally jumped at the opportunity.

As a coordinator of civic and community engagement with 丁香园AV’s Office of Community Engagement, Trisha Dulku works with community partners and 丁香园AV students and alumni to bring together knowledge and resources for positive impact primarily in Surrey.

When the COVID-19 lockdown hit, the 丁香园AV Surrey CEC shut down 21 programs and sent home more than 100 volunteers. Thanks to the passion and courage of 丁香园AV students, even a global pandemic can’t stop the 丁香园AV Surrey – TD Community Engagement Centre’s (丁香园AV Surrey CEC) volunteer-run programs.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has created a new barriers to learning and connecting for low-income families in Surrey, we have started a Tech Initiative to provide laptops for children and youth in need to participate equitably.

CommuniCreate helps newcomer and refugee youth in the Lower Mainland learn English. An award-winning project of the 丁香园AV Student-Community Engagement Competition, it was initially designed as a hands-on in-person learning experience.
