Be a bridge for hope and help address basic food, shelter and safety needs in the community.
The ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Surrey - TD CEC is supporting the Surrey Urban Mission Society to find compassionate and caring volunteers to support the under and unhoused population in Surrey City Centre.
Surrey Urban Mission Society (SUMS) was established as a faith-based community kitchen in 1995 with the backing of the local Lutheran Church and became a registered charity in 2001. Today, Surrey Urban Mission is a well-respected and sought after service provider, operating five locations in the City Centre area of Surrey that provide meals, shelter, housing, hygiene, and casework services year-round at the epicentre of Surrey's Housing and Opioid Crises.
Your Role:
As a SUMS volunteer, you will have a variety of options to choose from to support the community including: clothing and food donation assistance, kitchen assistance, serving meals, and supporting recreational activities. We are looking for kind, caring, respectful and compassionate individuals who want to make a difference with some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Training is provided.
In this role you will gain experience:
- Providing service and support to equity-deserving groups, and under/unhoused adults in the Surrey community.
- Demonstrating effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Working collaboratively with program staff to support community needs.
- Applying skills and strategies to solve problems and selecting an appropriate course of action.
Other benefits:
- Flexible volunteer opportunities
- Gain new skills
- Social interaction
- Expand your network of friends
- Have fun while making a difference
- Earn credit on your ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Co-Curricular Record (CCR).
This opportunity is recognized on the Co-Curricular Record (CCR)! The CCR is an official university document that tracks your co-curricular involvement at ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV. .
Dates and Times:
There are many day/time options for volunteers to choose from, as programming takes place every day of the week between the hours of 7:30am-3pm (Sundays from 5pm-8pm as well), depending on the program/activity.
In your application, please indicate your weekly availability and schedule preferences for days/times when you are available to volunteer. This will help us place you in an activity that works best for your schedule.
Surrey Urban Mission’s goal is to create a safe, healthy environment that would be appealing to volunteers; a place where it’s fun to come and give your time. Some of our volunteers come for a few hours, others for a day, and still others for days on end; it’s totally up to you how much time you give.
Volunteer Orientation: Volunteers will be required to attend an orientation. Options on dates/times for the orientation will be communicated directly to interested volunteers.
Location:
SUMS Place (10776 King George Blvd, Surrey, BC V3T 2X7) or buildings within walking distance of SUMS Place.
Requirements:
