Be prepared for winter in Burnaby Mountain

Know before you go

Winter weather is unpredictable, but your preparedness doesn’t have to be! Be ready for whatever weather comes your way this winter!

Plan Beforehand

  • and have a winter for your home, office, and .
  • Know what to do during extreme weather.
  • Drive slowly around Burnaby Mountain, allocate extra travel time for possible road closures, rerouting, or accidents on the road.
  • Be familiar with the priority snow clearing routes and check out live campus webcams on our Road Report webpage before heading out.
  • Follow to know about public transportation schedules or disruptions.
  • Be familiar with indoor walking routes (covered walkways) to prevent slips and falls.  

Stay connected and be informed

Know where to access important campus information and updates to help you plan and stay safe.  

  • Download ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Safe app and enable push notifications. Access safety and security information and resources, emergency contacts, and receive important campus alerts.
  • Stay up to date on the latest weather information, including potential campus closures at:

*Note: Updates will be provided on these channels by 6:00 a.m. during extreme weather events.  

  • Check your local media, ,  and your local municipality for additional supports during periods of severe weather.

Lock up and secure your space

Working and learning during the winter break

Campus Public Safety (CPS) is available 24/7, even during winter break. The Lone Worker Program (LWP) and Safe Walk program are also open to support you on campus.

Heating and ventilation reminders

To reduce greenhouse gases emissions over the break, thermostats and ventilation rates will be lowered in most buildings. If you will be occupying your area over the closure, email Facilities Services by December 13, 2024 at fmserv@sfu.ca. Include the following details: Date/s and time/s of presence, building name, room numner, and phone number of contact person.
