SYNOPSIS

Edouard (Remy Girard, Les Invasion Barbares), a public figure and retired History teacher, is slowly starting to lose his memory. Accustomed to speaking on all the stands, he must make himself more discreet, even if he believes he still has a lot to say. Edouard's son-in law hires his daughter Bérénice (Karelle Tremblay, Death of a Ladies Man) to help watch over him, even though she is a little lost herself. Their relationship will lead Edouard to revisit a time from his personal history that he had chosen to forget, and Bérénice to find meaning in her own life. The drama intensifies when Edouard's wife can no longer stand the effects the dementia has on her husband, and must choose between staying by his side until the end or spending the remaining years on her own terms.

About the artist

Alexis Normand highlights the points of tension faced by many francophones in minority-language situations. The Fransaskoise offers a solo concert that showcases elegant guitar playing and beautifully composed lyrics. Through her songs and documentary, Assez French, produced by the National Film Board of Canada, she recounts her personal journey about her identity and linguistic insecurities.

After intermission, she facilitates a conversation and Q&A with audience members about language, identity and belonging. These rich exchanges will allow for a greater understanding of the diversity and plurality of francophone identities.

LA CORDONNIÈRE tells the story of Victoire Du Saut, founder of the shoemaking company that made the Dufresnes' fortune, better known for the castle that bears their name in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. Although the entrepreneurial spirit and professional career of this visionary is admirable, it is above all her love affair that forms the heart of this melodrama where an impossible love, a sulphurous love triangle and a shocking family secret are intertwined.

About the artist

Master percussionist of Senegalese origin, singer-songwriter Élage Diouf uses the musicality of his mother tongue, Wolof, to invite listeners to follow him towards a universe of dance rhythms where everyone is invited to participate. Élage moved to Canada in 1996 to expand his musical career, one that continues to flourish today. His music–a hybrid of pop, world, blues, folk and asiko–is at the artistic crossroads of artists such as Carlinhos Brown, Peter Gabriel and Andres Cepeda. Due to the musicality of his native language, he sings mainly in Wolof. Sincere in his artistic approach, charismatic, authentic and simple, both in real life and on stage, people love him, and above all, he loves people. His performances are noted for his ability to involve the public, dancing and singing, both in the audience and those he invites on stage with him. His unique and warm timbre of voice, combined with his myriad of cultural influences, make him a unique artist.

SYNOPSIS

A true ode to the French language with its many accents in Quebec, Une histoire sur le goût de la langue traces its unusual trajectory, from the Conquest of 1759 to the present day. In addition to historians, linguists and other language enthusiasts, personalities recount pivotal events as they experienced them. A historical, engaging and uncomplicated documentary on the linguistic journey of a people once subjugated to the British Crown and now more than ever weakened by the hegemony of the English language.

This film will be presented as part of the history course, HIST 430 - French Americas taught by Nicolas Kenny.

¶¡ÏãÔ°AV's Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs and the Centre culturel francophone de Vancouver invite you to an open mic night on Thursday, March 30 at The Beaumont Studios at 6:00 pm. During this evening, amateur artists are invited to perform in front of an audience. Music, poetry, humor: show us what you got! This Open mic evening will be followed by a concert of Narcisse.

About Narcisse

Narcisse began his reckless electro-pop adventure in Quebec City in the spring of 2019 with the release of a self-titled debut EP. It is rocked by a lot of adventures that he was able to stand out by winning the second place of the 24th edition of the Francouvertes. Greatly influenced by French musical projects (such as Flavien Berger or Vendredi sur Mer), he inhabits the stage with sensuality and theatricality. In September 2022, he offers us his first album, La fin n'arrive jamais, which was very well received by the Quebec public. In an explosion of frenetic, colorful and dancing rhythms, Narcisse leads his audience into a collective trance. This is a project that brings together a variety of artists working in music, performance and dance. In his texts, Narcisse reinterprets certain Greek tragedies with a Queer sensibility. Through his show, he destabilizes labels and social codes with audacity and authenticity. Narcisse invites you to a new kind of mass that celebrates self-love, understanding and diversity.
